How can I get help with resolving a bug for the 'update-manager' package?
I reported this bug as prescribed by the help function almost two months ago and have not received any feedback.
Description of the bug is as follows: Report bug 'update-manager' package. 'E: Encountered a section with no Package Header,
E: Problem with MergeList/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I tried increasing the size of the APT::Cache-Limit as called for BUG #1389310 with no success.

I have struggled with the failure to update Ubuntu 12.04 for the past three months. I executed the commands suggested in FAQ#1591 and the error message I had been getting when opening the update manager went away, but a new error message came up: "Failed to download repository information. Check your internet connection." I thought that perhaps Ubuntu 12.04 was no longer being supported, so I tried to download Ubuntu 14.04. I received the same error message, 'Failed to download repository information." Is there something else I need to do to resolve this problem? Thanks!

You have defined the medibuntu.org server as repository to download software, but medibuntu has been shut down already some years ago. You have to remove that server from your configuration files.
Furthermore you seem to be missing the cryptographic key for the google repository which can be downloaded from the web.
What is the output of the commands
grep medubuntu /etc/apt/
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.

Ok, the reference to medibuntu is in the main sources.list file.
Issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
provide your password when asked for it, and then this will open an editor with the sources.list configuration file loaded.
Locate the line
deb http://
and delete this whole line.
save the file and close the editor.
Then check with
sudo apt-get update
whether you still see errors.

Your question #383957 on gnome-terminal in Ubuntu changed:
https:/
Status: Open => Needs information
Manfred Hampl requested more information:
What output do you now get for the commands
sudo apt-get update
apt-get --simulate dist-upgrade

Your output is a bit strange.
At the beginning there was a successful execution of the commands without any error message, and later the same command failed with "file not found" errors?
What exactly did you execute?
What is the output of the command
find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;
(Remark: it seems that you have three outdated repository references that should be deleted: hardy-backports, debian-multimedia and google chrome. The output of the command above will help identifying the required changes)

I executed the two commands one at a time. But when I tried to copy the output from my terminal and paste it into the reply email the first attempt failed.
So I repeated the copy and paste procedure. That may have caused a mixup in the output. The output for your last command request is below. Thanks!
larry@GibsonPC:~$ find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;

Execute the following commands:
sudo rm /etc/apt/
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
This will open an editor with the sources.list configuration file loaded.
Scroll down to line 43 and 44 and change 'hardy-backports' into 'precise-backports' (without quotes)
Scroll down to line 51 and change 'hardy' into 'precise'
Scroll down to the end of the file and delete the last four lines (beginning with '##Media Repos')
Scroll up to the beginning of the file and delete line number 4 (containing 'sudo gedit')
Save the file and close the editor.
Finally re-issue the command
sudo apt-get update
and copy/paste the results back into this question document.

Thanks Manfred Hampl, that solved my question.
