To get some info of your sound card, please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

May be this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/183686
but you can try to add the acpi=ht kernel parameter at boot to see if it helps http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140604

To boot your installed Ubuntu try to pass the acpi=ht as kernel parameter

Start the pc the when you see the GRUB row...

Press ESC.

Press "e" for edit.

Highlight the line that begins kernel ………, and press "e"

Go to the very end of the line, add acpi=ht

press enter, then press "b" to boot your system.

If you are able to listen audio then you must write this parameter into /etc/grub/menu.list

-------------------------------------------

Please edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and add acpi=ht to the default kernel parameter

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Search the row

# defoptions=........ your options

and add the "acpi=ht" parameter

# defoptions=........ your options acpi=ht

save and exit

then type:

sudo update-grub

Reboot your pc

Hope this helps

you are the bomb! I tried for a week to get my sound card working. I re-installed alsa , modules I even compiled alsa from scratch. I did everything in the trouble shooting guide. No joy. I stumbled upon this bug post, (after much google-fu) and did the simple grub edit. I have sound , joy joy, joy. I had sound with the same drivers with knoppix so I knew it was possible. Thank you so much. Hard to believe it was so simple. (I wish this fix was in the troubleshooting guide). Cheers to you!!!!
