Gnome Classic Places not working

Asked by Mining3

I have a core intel E2180 2 core with 200-gig hard drive from Free Geek Vancouver, it now reads I has been partitioned a hard drive that I did not want.

I very reluctantly upgraded from 11.04 to 12.04 using a CD I made off your site. I started to try to run 11.04 side by side with 12.04 it would not work. Then places drop down menu stopped working to acsess documents. I reload my 11.04 CD to fix every thing went OK in the download there was two security updates just after it said no updates where availble. Places still did not work. Frustrated I followed Ubuntu message saying to change to 11.10 but I just loaded the LTS 12.04 as I have had enough of non LTS with expired Unbutu versions just whe I figure out how to use the damm thing.

I created a new document and spell check does not work either after I saved I could not access it as per places not working. WE DO WANT A SONG AND DANCE OF SOM OTHER ROUNTINE. This software seems to be one BIG BUG. This why OLD FARTS DONT USE OR AT LEAST UPGRADE COMPUTERS.................I used windows 98SE till I went to Free Geek Vancouver two yeas ago. WE DON”T LIKE CHANGE - GET IT

So I reluctsantly upgraded to 12.04 boot from a CD 12.04 (64 bit desk top version as with the others) Googled Classic Gnome for 12.10 dowm loaded as package manager Places still does not work. Documents shows up on the bottom tool bar the as some icon kina thing than fades away.
The antivirus crap never updated either from complait yeas ago.

LOOK GUYS and GALS, US OLD DUMMIES NEED THE CLASSIC GMONE TO WORK WELL - we don't like all the foo foo. If I had the Power classic would Have..... all three drop down menus instead of two Aplications, Places, Systems. NEXT thing you are just going to have one drop down menu.

If did have court documents to type out many of which have been lost some recovered with the help of the good people of Free Geek Vancouver I would not even turn the dam thing on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CLASSIC LOOK IS FOR US OLD STUPPID PEOPLE IF IT DOES NOT WORK WE DON"T WANT TO USE UBUNTU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE DON"T WANT FIDDLE AROUND WITH IT ALL DAY JUST TO MAKE IT WORSE

DO I HAVE TO LIVE ON potatoes rice and beans TO SAVE FOR ONE OF THOSE NEW MACS EVERYONE SAYS IS BUG FREE???????????????????????????????????????????

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug. I understand you problem , but really is not necessary to shout . (Caps)

If you don't like the Unity environment you can try 2 other environments that looks like old gnome 2.

First is the gnome-session-fallback , you can install it from Software Center and logout and select the environment and see if meet your needs.

The other environment is MATE. MATE is a fork of gnome 2 (uses GTK2 as gnome 2) and is good development.
There you must add and external repository , because mate not included in main Ubuntu's repositories.

Search for MATE - Ubuntu at google and you will find the answer.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS supported until 2017 and is a good choice for those don't want to upgrade every 18 months.

Ubuntu 11.04 is EOL (dead) not supported anymore , so do not use this.

Thank you.

Dear Question Person

I found out I can attach a document on a email but Places still does not
work as I just did

So buy a Mac then, they more user friendly? Thanks, I thought it was a bug
if a fresh version or reload caused a non working default for a Places drop
down menu. As they say: Seems pretty queer to leave the garage with a new
motor and blinkers and instruments panel does not work. May the Ubuntu teem
needs some different a design engineer so it is not like a Yugo. If it is
the classic add on..................then make it standard as with 11.04

I guess MS and Mac user forums are right it is geekware not software

*PS* This geek stuff is tiresome and not dependable to most old people. Can
Windows 8 handle my LibreOffice Writer documents if save to a disk and then
put on a reformat computer with Windows 8 ? I will wait till my pension
check comes, then I go and buy a copy or do I need another computer so I
have to keep this one to view documents and pictures?

Beans, Rice and Potato for two or three weeks then, as it is stupid to get
angry at a pieces of plastic and some electronic morse code in a series 0
and 1s in groups of 8. At least that is what my near 90 year mother tells
me, who is way smarter at computer stuff than me. In the 1940s and 50s she
worked with secret computer stuff my father was not even allowed to know. I
asked her to fix my computer she laughed said go away. She said *"fixing a
computer for you is like asking me to fix your aeroplane when you can not
fly"*

Oh thanks for the speedy reply .....but I really don't know what you said.

I have a 21 day deadline that is now shot to file a Form 2 and a aplication
for Indigent Status in Supreme Court of BC. That so happens to be this
December 21st ironically, Could pleases tel the engineers that worked on
making Ubuntu LTS versions a reliable product. I don't want any one to feel
bad for my shitty luck but it is what it is.....Maybe my karma from a past
life or something it certainly is not theirs.

Yours Sincerely

Josh Thurston
