How to edit gnome-panel icons?

Asked by Janice Clough

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 in the Gnome 2 fallback mode. I am having two problems.

(1) I can pin icons to the top panel, but when I right click to remove one of them, that option is not available.
I am able only to launch the application and obtain properties from the right click.
There is no way to delete the icon.

(2) I also have looked and I find that there is no trash bin available in this mode.
I have no way to throw anything away.
Is there an easy fix for these problems?

Thanks for your help.

You don't right click to move them, just long click then drag the icon up and down. The right click will have 'Unlock from launcher'.

I am able to move the icons to the bottom panel by dragging and dropping. And if my "trash can" symbol were there as it was in 11.04, then I'd drop it in the trash and could be done. Unfortunately it isn't there. Also right clicking gives me only the options of "Launch" and "Properties". It gives no option of "Unlock from Launcher." I'm sure it probably does do that in Unity. I haven't tried that, and I shall. But in Unity I won't have the same panel setup and structure, and I'd still have my original problem when I return to the Gnome 2 fallback mode. But thanks. I can at least move them now.

I received notice that my summary of the problem had been changed to read, "Unity Launcher Icons . . . Where Are They?" This tells me that the person who changed that did not read my question. This has nothing to do with Unity launcher icons. That is an entirely different subject. Please allow me to softly repeat that I am asking about the icons on the Gnome 2 fallback panel. Please allow me to reinterate. First, there is no way to remove icons from the panel once I have placed them there. I found the idicator applet a very useful and fun tool. But even though that has been removed, that is still not the issue. It is the fact that Gnome 2 fallback still allows indicators to be placed on the panel, but does not allow them to be removed. Moved--yes, removed--no.
Sam read my question and kindly gave me a partial answer. Thank you very much Sam. In the Ubuntu forums dealing with Gnome Classic it reads, "As of Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu's Indicator Applet has not been ported to the new GNOME Panel." But it also reads, "Panel applets can be modified by holding the Alt key when you right-click on the panel." Unfortunately this is not the case. If I press Alt and right click, I am told what the application is, and in some cases it will give me the option of launching it. But it does not in any way allow a change to the indicator, nor a removal of it. I did install Gnome Tweak Tool as suggested by that same forum. Again I was able to do limited functions, but not able to do any of what I originally set out to do, so I uninstalled it. It did allow me to put a trash can on the desktop, although not in the panel. It did not allow me to put any of the indicator icons into it or remove them. As such, the trash can in several cases proved worthless, and so I also removed that also.
Please do not take this as "ranting." I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to offer imput. But as a part of the community, I am simply reasoning through the steps that I have taken so far, and making you aware that there is a problem with how Gnome 2 fallback operates. Perhaps it can be remedied. Sam's answer got me closer, but I still have no solution to what I asked . I am disappointed to not be able to customize my theme and use colors that I prefer in my various applications. I had hoped that Ubuntu would continue to allow that freedom. But, as for the current problem, I simply have some icons on my panel that I'd like to be able to remove, and I'd also like the same ease of moving items to the trash that I had in 11.04. I'm not able, as of yet, to do that. Thanks for listening. Thanks very much for your help.

Janice, I have no idea who changed the subject and if it was changed at all. If you've got such a message per email then there should be a sender.
Anyway I've changed the title, if you don't agree it's easy to edit the title or else by yourself with click at the top right box of this page 'Edit question'.

Regarding gnome-session-fallback mode I'd recommend to ask users at ubuntuforums.org which use the same desktop environment or search the web for guides.
The classic gnome in 12.04 isn't exactly the same as it used to be when Gnome2 existed.

Sam,
Thanks for all your efforts and help. You've been a gentleman.

I did receive a notification that the summary had been changed. I did not pinpoint the sender as there is no need to make personally directed comments against someone who is only attempting to help. I know that the folks at launchpad work hard to help others. And I always appreciate their willingness to give input to solve the problems that others encounter. My comments were directed at only two things. First to try to solve a problem I am having. Second to make folks aware that there is a problem with how a particular aspect of Ubuntu is working. I gathered that those are the purposes of the launchpad questions and answers anyway.

Again, thanks for helping and for letting me know that there is a way to change the summary back again myself. I truly was not aware of that, and would have changed it myself, without comment, had I known. I am learning, and every piece of information is very helpful. Thanks for helping me further that learning.
I will try what you suggested. You're correct, the Classic Gnome in 12.04 isn't what it was in earlier releases. But I'm grateful to have what is there until I can find a workable alternative. I have been working to try to come up with another viable solution to make ease of use what I once had. I haven't achieved that as of yet, but will eventually.
I hope your day goes well. Again thanks for all your help.

Janice

Thanks to everyone who gave input into my question. This isn't solved yet, but I will most definitely try what Sam has suggested. Perhaps someone in Ubuntu forums has encountered something similar. I am working to find another viable solution to Gnome 2. I haven't as of yet found what I'm looking for, but hopefully will eventually resolve that issue.
