Hangs after 20 minutes of idle

Asked by Peter

Ubuntu will hang after 20 minutes of sitting Idle. I have my screen saver set to come on after 10 minutes the display to turn off after an hour of idle.

What happens when the computer hangs is, I wiggle the mouse and the screen comes back on. The cursor shows up, ubuntu makes its little wake back up noise, then the cursor disappears. Then the cursor comes back, ubuntu makes the wake up noise again, then the cursor goes back away. This will continue to happen until I hard shutdown the computer. This happens whether the computer is on power or on battery.

Did you set screen to sleep or whole PC to hibernate ? From your description, it looks more like second one.

You may take a look at bug section on top of this page and review the list of reported bugs.
Just for example this Bug #366737 incl. comment #4 which describes how to create a debug log. For this procedure you may try to switch to tty (text mode only), with shortcut ctrl+alt+f1 and type the cmds.
Maybe just by killing screensaver it's possible to go back to GUI via ctrl+alt+f7.

You can either confirm a bug by clicking on 'does this bug affect you' or report your own via CLI:
LANG=C ubuntu-bug gnome-screensaver
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

> hard shutdown the computer

Instead of hardreset (which may corrupt fs sooner or later) rather try MagicSysRq.

Other hints.
