how to put workspace switcher on panel

Am using newly-installed Ubuntu 9.10 operating system -- the gnome workspace switcher applet is working only from keyboard. would like to A) add to panel and B) be able to adjust the number of workspaces, etc.

Alright first you right click on the panel you already have, then
click add panel. Then right click on the workspace switcher and then
preferences, there you can change stuff.
