panel doesn't appear can't access applications,place, etc.

Asked by niojedao@gmail.com

After downloading according to Update Manager suggestions and restarting, the top-bottom panel doesn't appear. Have restarted the laptop several times using Ctrl, Alt, Del sometimes even using the off button when the three don't work. Thus, I have no access to any of the applications, places, system, nor any of the typical additions I had made to the panel such as time, weather, shutdown and so on. I'm using previous internet documents which lead me here. Can't get to the root terminal either.

Thanks you for your help.

To reset the gnome panel to defaults, type this in a terminal:

 gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

Please try Alt + F2 should bring up a up a run dialog?

If it does, then please type in "gnome-terminal" without the quotes in it to get a terminal.

Then type : gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

Else try typing "Ctrl+Alt+(F2 through F6)"

It should display a TTY asking for a login.

Login with your username and password and you should now have command-line access.

Now type in gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel && killall gnome-panel

"Ctrl+Alt+F7" should return you to your desktop.
