Hello!

As far as i know, there are no USB-connected wireless adapters which work directly out of the box.

People have had success with Netgear's USB wireless line, and searching in google should yield a large array of walkthroughs for you. Here is one from the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51993

Thanks for your reply. Would I succeed more easily by connecting to
the router using a cable with a RJ45 plug. If so this would side-step
any issues with USB adapters. You may already have deduced that I'm
relatively new to the world of computers and their vagaries.

A few do, its the chip you should worry about. atheros usually work nice and older realtek work good too. Cheap ones will most likely use broadcom 43xx chips which have support now
