I lose Internet connection whenever I try to download anything

Asked by Nermi

I am on Ubuntu 9.10 and this is my first install of Ubuntu. Everything else works fine except I have a weird problem when I try to download anything. It doesn't matter if I use Synaptic to download new packages or try to download any file of the Internet, I lose my Internet connection, not only on my Ubuntu machine, but on my other (Windows) computers as well. At that point, I have to shut down all computers, and restart the modem.

I have Netgear wireless adapter, and Netgear router. IP addresses are obtained automatically. Never had serious connection problems on my Windows computers.

ifconfig:

I can provide any additional information if needed. If this problem is ever resolved, I will switch to Ubuntu for all my work, as I love it!

Ok, I am cautiously optimistic... I have downloaded and installed few packages in Synaptic and didn't have problems. Although, downloaded and installed Google Chrome for Linux... So far so good!

I will try few more things and post the results back here. Oh it's been months, and I hope this is the breakthrough...

Now, can you tell me, in short, and in plain English, what did I install that (hopefully) solved the problem?

Thanks.

Good choice with Chrome. I believe you will like it much more than garbage firefox

Still testing... It had happened before that my downloads appeared to work fine and then after few hours or next day I had the same problem.

Will post the results back here tomorrow.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I have to report that the fix didn't work.

For some reason, yesterday I was able to download several packages and internet files with no problem, but this morning the same problem is back: whenever I try to download anything, I lose Internet connection on all my computers, Ubuntu and Windows.

This is really weird; I was searching all over and I don't see any posts with similar problem...

Sorry, but I am not sure what I am supposed to do here. It looks, from the links you posted, that some people can not connect to Internet at all... I can, I have problem only when I try to download something.

Is it possible that I am the only one with this problem?

Could be :D don't worry there are many time when this happens to me:
no one else has that problem besides me, but here in this case, I
recommend reporting a bug [1]

Have you tried using ndiswrapper instead of the driver you currently use?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Nermi for more information if necessary.
