Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -C usb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep iwl; iwconfig; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

OK, you have a special version of Broadcom chipset, 14e4:4315, which requires a special installation routine.

Please try the following installation procedure:

Boot your pc and enter BIOS setup utility: choose option "load default values".

Insert the Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit edition LiveCD. You might need to download it first, if you do not have it. Boot from this CD and install Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit edition onto your harddisk using the LiveCD session.

After installation, reboot into the installed Ubuntu 9.04 system.

Then open a Terminal and run the following 2 commands to update Ubuntu 9.04 on the harddisk:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

Then download the following drivers using this command:

wget http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz

which come from this site:

http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

Follow these build and installation instructions carefully:

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

In a terminal, type : gksudo gedit /etc/modules

Add the following line to the end of the modules file:

wl

Then run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add the following 4 lines to the end of the blacklist.conf file

blacklist b43
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ndiswrapper

Reboot and then test wireless.
===================================================================================================

If the previous procedure does not work for you, you can try this one instead:

Step A) edit blacklist.conf file in Ubuntu 9.04:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Search for the following line and REMOVE it so that ndiswrapper is allowed to load:

blacklist ndiswrapper -> remove this line

Step B) Execute the procedure below:

http://www.colinblog.com/2008/04/how-to-install-broadcom-bcm4310-usb.html

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Mark

Thanks a lot Mark, i am writing this message from WiFi.
Well i need one more help. I installed ubuntu just for Fun as i already have vista. But i found it so exciting that now i don't even want to login in vista. But i have one problem. when i installed ubuntu i allocated 10 GB space only and no swap area also.
Can we allocate more space after installation without needing to reinstall, i have one partition fully blank.

It worked!

Thanks Mark.

About the only change was to add "sudo" in front of some of the the Broadcom README code instructions to get permission.

After the install the machine did not see networks for a few minutes, so I tried the hardware slider on the front, which promptly turned blue! A minute or so later I could get the menus to connect wireless by right clicking on the signal icon on the top bar.

Glad to become part of the Linux community.

Well . . . I spoke too soon.

After doing the install everything worked. I browsed the web and emailed.

On reboot the wireless was not working, again.

Any fix suggestions appreciated.
