b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found -> BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01) not working on Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by FunnyWeasel

Hi,

I have a dell Inspiron E1505 laptop.

I used to be a windows xp user, but my system became corrupt and kept giving me the blue screen. I tried some corrections that didn't work and then consulted a coworker. He told me that 2 windows werre installed on the same partition and and it could no longer be read. He helped me install Ubuntu and now the computer is working, but I can't get my wireless to pick up on any networks. It displays that the Wireless Networks device is not ready. I have been searching the forums, but I am not very computer savvy and most of them just confused me. Please Help

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy-paste the line below into a Terminal, press enter, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again)

cat /etc/lsb-release; sudo iwlist scanning; sudo lshw -C network; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread

Keep in mind that one or more of the following 5 basic components need to be configured correctly so that wireless can work correctly in Linux:

Wireless configuration in the BIOS, hardware wireless switch setting, active wireless driver version, the firmware for the wireless chipset (stored as a file in Linux), and the configuration of the wireless parameters in wicd or NetworkManager (SSID broadcast settings, encryption settings, name of wireless interface stored in wicd, the chosen channel for wireless transmission, ...) .

Regards,

Mark

Also, I have an internal wireless card that came with the computer. I used to enable and disable the wireless with holding the fn key and hitting f2, which no longer does anything.

Hi,

Your wireless issue is identical to this one:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56393

I think you are experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819

Please try this workaround solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819/comments/58

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

Regards,

Mark
