Try:

echo "options rtl8188ee ips=0 swlps=0 fwlps=0 aspm=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8188eefix.conf > /dev/null

Reboot to test. If it is no good then you can revert the change with:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8188eefix.conf

Then reboot

Dear actionparsnip,

Thanks very much for working on this slow wi fi problem -- unfortunately,
it didn't work. In fact, there was no wi fi. So I commented out the
created file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8188eefix.conf, and (slow) wi fi came back.

I can give some additional information that might be useful:
Whenever the system is rebooted, wi fi disappears. When I reboot a second
time; wi fi is back.
??

Again, help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Some other details: Occasionally wi fi is strong; but at other times very slow. So the wi fi speed is unpredictable.
Another, slower Asus computer, also running Ubuntu 20.04, always sees fast wi fi. The two laptops are right next to each other.

Oooppsss....

I was too optimistic. The intermittent slow wi fi problem is back.

I've used a "cheat" method to get 100% consistent internet speed on my HP laptop: I have two laptops, right next to each other -- the HP and an Asus. The HP is a faster computer -- but has intermittently poor wi fi speed. The Asus is slower -- but has consistently excellent wi fi speed. So, I joined the two computers with an Ethernet cable, and looked up how I could make the Asus handle internet connections for both computers (sort of making the Asus act as an internet server, and the HP an internet client).

It works!

Of course, this is not really a solution. It's a workaround.

The cheat method doesn't work.
I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with my internet speed.

Earlier, you had suggested installing a file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8188eefix.conf; that didn't work; it made wi fi not work.

But modifying that file to contains the two lines:

options rtl8188ee ant_sel=1
options rtl8188ee swlps=0

did work! Wi fi is now fast. I've tested it thoroughly; about 50+ invocations of speedtest-cli.

Thanks for sending the fix file; the line swlos=0 worked. (I have no idea what that does.)

Thanks again Actionparsnip.

Not so good. But the following made it easy to (I hope correctly) edit my /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8188ee.conf file:

1

Before you start, you will need to install sysfsutils:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sysfsutils

First, to show the options that are currently in use and the existing parameters, run the following command:

sudo systool -a -v -m rtl8723be | grep -A8 "Parameters:"

Under "Parameters:", you will see the available options and the existing parameters. Here is an example of that section:

  Parameters:
    debug = "1"
    disable_watchdog = "N"
    fwlps = "Y"
    ips = "Y"
    msi = "Y"
    swenc = "N"
    swlps = "N"

It appears that the msi option can be set to Y or N.

To set msi to off, you should run the following commands:

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be msi=N

Now, verify the change:

sudo systool -a -v -m rtl8723be | grep -A8 "Parameters:"

The output should now look like this:

  Parameters:
    debug = "1"
    disable_watchdog = "N"
    fwlps = "Y"
    ips = "Y"
    msi = "N"
    swenc = "N"
    swlps = "N"

To make this change permanent, you should create a file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf. Run the following command:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

Now, copy and paste the following into the file:

options rtl8723be debug=1
options rtl8723be disable_watchdog=N
options rtl8723be fwlps=Y
options rtl8723be ips=Y
options rtl8723be msi=N
options rtl8723be swenc=N
options rtl8723be swlps=N

Press CTRL + o and then press ENTER to save the file. Press CTRL + x to exit nano.

Now you can make changes to this file to apply your desired settings. After you make changes to the file, run the following commands to apply the changes:

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be

After doing as suggested above, the system is much better. Usually,
download speed is about 40megabits per second, upload speed about 50
megabits per second.

But, strangely, after using the computer a bit, wi fi speeds go down to
single digits.

There is a fix: I fI close the laptop, and re-open it, wi speeds go up
again.

But I suspect that I'm missing something -- there's probably something I
could do that would make this closing and reopening the laptop unnecessary.

Advice appreciated.
