If you have a shortcut key or switch to enable/disable wireless then press it.

Your WLAN device seems to be disabled by a switch.
Most Laptops have a Fn-Fx key combination to enable/disable WLAN, or some even have a hardware switch to turn it on/off.

Try to enable the device. Running "rfkill list" will show the status. Maybe also changing certain BIOS settings can help.

My laptop does not have any physical wifi switch.
I tried rfkill list, the output was-

0: Toshiba Bluetooth: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes
2: hci0: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

____ Then I tried "FN+F8" and then "rfkill list" again. The output was-

 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
2: hci0: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

____ I visited "https://wikidevi.com/wiki/List_of_Wi-Fi_Device_IDs_in_Linux" and found out that my network adapter was supported by old kernel. (I don't know if this info is useful or not.)

Is Ubuntu the only OS on this computer, or do you have a dual-boot system with Windows?
In that case you could try booting into Windows, pressing the related key combination and then reboot into Ubuntu.

Also resetting the BIOS to default values has helped in some cases.

"booting into Windows, pressing the related key combination and then reboot into Ubuntu" solved the problem.

Sigh.... I spent days in trying to solve this problem.

I really appreciate your help.
