wi-fi continuously drops out

Asked by Mike

I have a HUAWEI E5776v2 LTE OV PP Wifi modem.
I bought it about 5 months ago new from an OPTUS (Australia) Dealer.
I use it to access the Net from my cell phone (works perfectly), also from my iPad Air (works perfectly) and from my MEDION AMD64 running Linux 14.10
On the MEDION only, the signal continually drops out at around 2 to 3 minute intervals.
I turned the cell phone and iPad off but that made no difference to the Linux machine, it continues to lose the signal.
The wifi icon does not indicate when the signal is gone. I only notice when the Chromium refresh arrow reverses and greys out.
I then click the wifi icon drop-down menu and though it indicates "connected" its not and I have to manually disconnect then reconnect manually.

I've been trying to sort out the problem for months now by reading articles and help sites but I'm stuck. Help please.

Ok and the output of :

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a

Thanks.

I assume that if you run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You don't install any updates. ..

I'm not sure whats happening with updates. Since I updated to 14.10 I get a message telling me upgrade failed whenever I try to update - something to do with virtualBox. I'm an old fella and not real savvy with the innards yet.

echo "options rtl8192cu swenc=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ 8192cufix.conf > /dev/null

Sorry if i seem a bit dumb but is your suggested fix meant to be a single command line or does the " | " before sudo tee / etc signify a second command line entry?

Yes it's one big command. The pipe character is how you lino the output of one command to another in Linux

No change. Just FYI, i took the sim card out of the Huawei WiFi modem and put it back in my 4G USB dongle (its not a wifi device so I couldn't test it with my iPad or phone. The connection still got "lost" but probably every 5 or 6 mins instread of the constant 2 mins of the Huawei. Also there is always at least 2 signal bars showing on the wifi device.

I had no issues before I upgraded to 14.10. Everything worked as it should.

What did you upgrade from?
What steps did you take?

I upgraded from 14.04 LTS

I read the notes on the UBUNTU site about upgrading to 14.10 before doing so. However, since upgrading, every time update i get a message telling me as problem was detected with VirtualBox. Could this be causing the wifi problem? If so how do i get rid of VB of my computer (unless I need it for some arcane reason).
Thanks for persevering with me.

Considering Ubuntu 14.10 is only supported til July 2015 and Ubuntu 14.04 is supported til April 2019...why upgrade at all if "Everything worked as it should" ?

Now that's a very good question. I guess I just like to have the latest. Will I start a new question to find out how to revert to 14.04 and if I do that - go back to 14.04-would that fix the issue with Vbox?

You will need to reinstall to go back.
