Do you dual boot the system?
If you have a button or keyboard shortcut to enable / disable wifi then press it. Is it ok?

Thanks

Your Wifi is "hard-block", meaning it is switch off by a hardware switch, usually a key combination like Fn + some function key, a button next to the keyboard or a little switch.
On some laptop models (HP especially) you need to use Windows to activate the Wifi or reset the BIOS settings.
If that is the case don't forget to complain to the manufacturers support, so they know that their Linux support is not good.

Yes, it's dual booted with windows 8.

The wifi works fine in when booted in windows 8. It's side-by-side with
windows.

I bet if you boot to Windows and enable the wifi then reboot to Ubuntu it works, right?

Please run the following commands in a Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source

This will uninstall the bcmwl-kernel-source Ubuntu package, which contains the wl driver.

The GNU/Linux kernel is loading 2 different wireless drivers (wl and rt2800pci) into memory.

It could be that the wrong wireless driver (wl driver) is preventing the right driver (rt2800pci) from working correctly.

After running those commands, reboot and retest wireless.

If still not working after the reboot, try these 2 commands:

sudo su

echo "blacklist hp_wmi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

After running those commands, reboot and retest wireless again.

Please indicate which post or posts solved your issue.

Then please set the thread status to "solved".

Thanks.

Hi,

I lost my wifi after upgrading my ubuntu 14.04 and therefore, upgrading linux image to version 3.13.0-35-generic. The solution proposed here (ie. remove bcmwl-kernel-source) didn’t work (even when blacklisting hp_wmi).

The solution was to remove and then re-install the bcmwl-kernel-source package. My laptop is an asus x550lnv-xo192h.

Hope this might help.

Regards,

@ghortor: I'm happy to read that your wireless issue is solved. But please keep in mind that your hardware and wireless adapter is totally different from the one in this thread.

Stephe's PC contains a Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe [1814:3090] wireless adapter which does not run on the wl driver (part of the bcmwl-kernel-source package). It runs on the rt2800pci driver. Ralink drivers and Broadcom drivers (like the wl driver) are totally different. Issues with the 2 different pieces of hardware very often require separate and specialized solutions....

So your wireless issue and solution belongs in a different thread.

If you ever encounter an issue in Ubuntu, please create a separate thread instead of reusing someone else's thread in order to avoid confusion.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask stephe connelly for more information if necessary.
