offline Ubuntu Precise needs nic driver software

Asked by Dr. L. J. (Sam) Bledsoe

My Ubuntu Precise system, quercus, lost it's mobo nic function in a power failure. I put in a PCI wireless nic and need to install a Windows driver using ndiswrapper-- downloaded ndisgtk on another machine and transferred via flash drive to quercus but the Precise software center says "install from regular software channel" and cannot download additional ndiswrapper files that it needs from Ubuntu Software Center-- since quercus is offline! How do I install software in an Ubuntu Precise system which is off-line until it gets the software?

What wifi chip does the device use?

The wifi chip is AR2413/2414 and I have the Windows drivers for it-- the
problem is I need the manual software installation procedures for
ndiswrapper to package the driver. Ubuntu Software Center only wants a
direct download from the internet-- which is not available until I have the
wifi driver installed.

Thanks- gnome-nettool is neat. It confirms that I have hardware installed
for wifi access but it needs a software driver.

Re: How do I install software in an Ubuntu Precise system which is off-line until it gets the software?

Synaptic supports the installation of packages via another computer. If you have synaptic installed, you can mark required packages for installation and/or update, and then use the menu entry 'File - create download script'. This will create a script file with wget commands.
Transfer that script to another computer and execute it there to download all files to a (preferably empty) directory (e.g. on an USB stick). Mount that stick on your target computer and use the Synaptic menu entry 'File - Install downloaded packages'.

If you do not have the synaptic package installed, you have first to download the synaptic_*.deb package and install it. (command sudo dpkg -i synaptic....deb). If that complains about missing dependencies, you have to install these packages as well.

Thanks Manfred-- I do have synaptic installed and it seems to give me route to manually install ndiswrapper. However I discovered that after executing gnome-nettool yesterday, this morning my wireless capability was functional. The Atheros chipset had a driver/module, ath and ath5k, and they were functioning normally. Not sure what changed in my system but---

--problem solved! Thanks to all
