No wireless-n band for Atheros AR9485 b/g/n card

Asked by Andrew Wheelwright

I have an ASUS G75VW with the Atheros AR9485 wireless b/g/n card. I have a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Wireless N router configured to handle b/g/n. When booting windows, I have no problem connecting via n band but in Kubuntu 12.04 I'm only getting b/g. How do I enable n band support?

Here is the output from the WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure script:

Try:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail > /dev/null

reboot to test

No joy. Still using b/g after reboot.

But it connects and you get web access?

I have a similar problem see bug #1063245

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1063245

You may need a to plug and unplug a LAN a few times to test this.

Check that your router has both g an n bands enabled simultaneously in the router

Open up a terminal and try the following

sudo iwlist scan

Post the results back here. I expect to see both band g and band n signals.

Now in the router disable band g and set security to none.

Can you see and connect to the router using wireless?

Once done reconnect a LAN cable to enable band g again and re-enable security settings.

I have an Atheros AG9462 you have the AG9485 both using the Ath9k driver.

My install is a separate boot, yours is Wubi. If I am correct this is a bug and needs to be reported as such. If not the fix for your problem will probably also fix mine

The iwlist scan output is in the original post. Here's the portion related to my router. You'll notice two sets of bit rates which (I'm guessing here) are for b and g bands respectively. There does not appear to be a set of bit rates for n band reported by the scan. Note that the router reports b/g/n mixed mode and (again) I can connect to the n band from windows. I will attempt to connect with only n band enabled and report back.

Once again, no joy. I could not connect to the router when it was configured for band n only (w/ no security).

@actionparsnip
I've always been able to connect wirelessly via b/g band but I'd like to get the data rate of the n band which it seems like my system doesn't recognize under linux.

Are there any bugs reported with the chip?

For web access you won't see any difference at all. You will only see a difference in speed if you copy files over LAN or if your broadband speed exceeds.120Mbps

I do copy files over the WLAN, and that frequently.

Your problem is similar to mine but not identical

1. I suggest you report a bug
    In a terminal enter

    ubuntu-bug network-manager

This will take you to a webpage and you you can add some details

2. I have had a search on the internet and there are suggestions that disabling hardware decryption helps.
I have not tested it yet but I will tonight.

For details see here

http://www.pedrorainho.eu/blog/ubuntu1204fixath9kdriver

check if the file exists first and if it does its contents because you will want to change your system back to how it was if it makes no difference.

Let me know how you get on

Warren,

I tried disabling hardware decryption before and it made no difference for me. I opened bug #1064202 and linked it with this thread.

Hi,

I can reproduce this bug. I have a Asus G55V, running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32bit with AR9485. I came across this bugreport, trying to figure out why my n band connections don't show up. Just as in your bugreport, other b/g bands work fine, but neither iwlist scan nor networkmanager show any n networks. The n network that is supposed to show up is unencrypted.

To eliminate other sources of the problem, I tested with another 12.04 laptop (Dell Alienware w/ Centrino N chipset sitting at same location) where the n network shows up and connects just fine. So it seems to be chipset related.
