First, from a wired connection, update your system (update manager).
After the update, the proprietary drivers are usually available under the "additional drivers" item which used to be under system/administration, now do the dashboard search.
Maybe the fan is on for a reason? Maybe install the lm-sensors package, and see what the temperatures look like when you run "sensors" in a terminal.
Also please run in a terminal the following command so we can see what wireless hardware you have:
sudo lshw -C network
There have been some problems reported with the Broadcom driver with certain older chips, may have to use the b43 driver in that case.

Just to confirm, you are running the 11.10 Ubuntu release? 10.11 does not exist, 10.10 does, so I am a little confused.
Your 4312 Broadcom chip is well supported with either the default b43 driver, or the proprietary Broadcom STA driver, but I have heard of problems starting in 11.04 with the Broadcom STA driver with 4311 chips. The problem however is typically just the inability to connect, network-manager does display the nearby access points.
All the b43 drivers needs is the firmware.
Did you get the firmware files? They will be put into directory /lib/firmware/b43. If you did not get the offer to download them, "completely remove" or "purge" the b43-fwcutter package and do another install of b43-fwcutter.
sudo apt-get purge b43-fwcutter
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
You should then get the download offer, accept it.
If the b43 driver does not connect, check that it is not being suppressed (done by the installation of the Broadcom STA driver). Look for the exact line "blacklist b43" in any file in /etc/modprobe.d and either comment it out or delete it.
Network manager should display the nearby access points that are broadcasting their ssid. Click on yours or if yours is not displayed, click on "connect to hidden network" and supply the ssid.

Which driver did not install? the BroadcomSTA or the video?

Your temps do not look bad, but I have seen other complaints of fan being on all the time, so there may be an issue here.

1. my bad -it's Ubuntu 11.10
2.no b4 folder or file under firmware,
3.dud the purge and the re-install it.
4.found 1 file : blacklist bcm43.conf :

# Warning: This file is autogenerated by bcmwl. All changes to this file will be lost.
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ssb
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist brcm80211

but cant delete it(?) or edit it(?)

5.network manager does not display any wireless option, only wired connection, or network proxy
in "network connections" under wireless i don't have anything.

6.if you mean in "additional drivers" - proprietary drivers... I have 3 items:

a.ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)

b.ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver -(3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards.
This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of some ATI graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards.)

c.Brodcom STA wireless driver - ( This package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-,BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-based hardware.)

when trying to activate "C," "A" - i get same error msg.(installation failed...)
when trying to activate B - the FGLRX i get a "Downloading and installing the driver" and an arrow icon to
reset -to complete the installation. after restart - same window, same problem.

I found in the Blacklist folder that file (fglrx.conf):

# This file was installed by fglrx
# Do not edit this file manually

blacklist radeon
alias fglrx fglrx
alias radeon off
alias lbm-radeon off

relevant?

For 11.10, I'd definitely suggest using the b43 driver.
The blacklist-b43.conf file should be deleted when you deactivate the Broadcom STA driver, but you may delete it yourself:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-b43.conf

Driver installation failures are puzzling, are you running as the first user with the sudo priviledges?

Did you get the download offer when you installed the b43-fwcutter package? Does the directory /lib/firmware/b43 exist containing files ending in .fw?

Your chip firmware is also in another package which you may install:
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

This will put (opensource) firmware files into /lib/firmware/b43-open which will be checked automatically. Unfortunately, using this firmware in 11.10 will slow your shutdown by a minute (bug # 897120).

If you make another question specifically about the ATI Radeon drivers someone who knows more about them than I may respond. I'g guess that the "blacklist radeon" may be causing some problems -- try editing the file and comment out those lines by adding a # to the beginning
gksudo gedit fglrx.conf

I was suffering from the same issue with my radeon 4570 proprietary drivers failing to install. Simple fix for me was to allow software packaged by canonical for its partners under System Settings > Software Sources > Other Software(tab)

Can you help with this problem?
