Can't Start Wireless in Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by willens

I have a problem similar to that raised in question # 154695. I was asked to post it as a new question.

Running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 in dual boot configuration. An initial attempt to do an in-line upgrade from v 10 to v 11 hung at the final stage, so I ran a clean install of the new version. There seems to be a recovery version of the failed install attempt on my computer. I don't know how to get rid of that, but the new install of v 11.04 seems to run OK and wired network runs fine with new version. I did install and activate the proprietary driver for my wireless card after I couldn't connect to wireless initially, but that did not resolve the problem. I still cannot enable my wireless adapter in v 11.04.

My wireless worked fine with the previous Ubuntu version. My Wireless is controlled by a hotkey which is enabled in system setup and in Windows, but comes up disabled in Ubuntu 11.04 and cannot be turned on. I ran the diagnostic suggested in the referenced previous post. Here are the results:

The error "b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load failed" means that b43-fwcutter is not installed yet on your pc. And that means that the Broadcom firmware for your wireless card is not loaded or installed yet.

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following 2 commands into the Linux Terminal. Press <enter> after each command.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it. Use a wired connection to get b43-fwcutter installed.

After installing b43-fwcutter, please reboot and then retest wireless.

I have seen this Broadcom error message so many times before. The reason why the Broadcom wireless driver does not work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu , is because the firmware for your wireless card is proprietary.

The firmware files for your wireless card are not allowed to be included as part of the default Ubuntu install, because it is non-free software.

I had tried this before And just tried it again. It doesn't resolve my
problem.

When the wireless first didn't work, I searched for additional drivers from
the 11.04 main screen. It found Broadcom STA Wireless driver and installed
it normally and activated it. When I went back to that screen, it says it
was installed and active. Just to be sure, I did the install you suggested,
previously from a reference from another user with a similar problem, then
again just now using your instructions, which were the same.

My machine can still not detect the wireless adapter in 11.04, even though I
had no similar problems with previous versions of Ubuntu on this same
machine

Any further suggestions on what I can try next? Thanks.

I suggest following this step:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/760920/comments/3

as described in the following bugreport:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/760920

It worked for uga, so it should also work for you, as you are both using the same hardware...

I have no further suggestions....

Thanks. Your bug report did lead to a solution to my immediate problem: I can now access the Internet through my wireless adapter in 11.04 using the workaround suggested in bug report 760920, but see my further comment there regarding residual problem with keyboard control of wireless adapter.
