2: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02) disabled by software kill switch on HP Pavilion dv 2000 in Ubuntu 10.10
I have an issue with Maverick on my HP dv 2000.
Before Maverick wireless ran fine. Since I have upgraded to maverick wireless has been at best intermittent. Wireless won't switch on all the time and some times stays on but the indicator light blinks. Sometimes it just won't work. I don't seem to be able to get it to work by disconnecting and then reconnecting, does anyone experience similar problems.
Does anyone know of a solution?
Under Windows HP have a tool call HP wireless connection wizard or something similar if I remember right. Is there a version for Linux or do we need to add one to the wish list?
Thanks for your help,
Peter

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

That is as far as I can go back...any more ask for it!
For Actionparsnip: I think that what you wanted is just the first few lines of the above.
Guys, if there is anything else that you want let me know

Do you have a switch or button combo you press or switch to enable wifi? If so, press / switch it.

Mark's question as I understood it was to get me to do what I did with the WiFi
off. However I will run with WifI on and see what you get!
Peter
If you like I will rerun with the Wifi off

My understanding of the question asked was that it didn't matter whether I ran it with the switch on or off, but that for Mark's request that I needed to do it with the cable in so that I could get the downloads from apt-get. (there is no e'net otherwise) HOWEVER should it help at all here is the what happens with the eth0 plugged in for Mark's request BUT WITH THE wifi switch on too.

In reply to actionparsnip's request this is his bit with the wifi switched on (but no light on to indicate that all is happy with the world) and eth0 unplugged:

BTW networking is enabled according to the toolbar (well, we know it will run with eth0), but it won't let me enable wireless at all. If I disable networking with the wifi switched on however it bring up the wireless notification that I am disconnected (the "ray" with a red "X" and you are disconnected". When I re- enable networking I get told that I am offline with the same ray symbol)

The following Terminal output (that you sent us) shows the issue that your wireless card is
having (wireless is still disabled via a software AND a hardware switch, even after you play with the hardware switch....):
"

Hard blocked: no
1: hp-bluetooth: Bluetooth

So your wireless card is disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a COMBINATION of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset after rebooting:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all

OK, so finally we got there - sort of!
In the end I couldn't find an appropriate switch in the BIOS so reset the lot (as I hadn't made any major changes to it). I then rebooted and did
sudo rfkill unblock all
That got the "blue light" on.
Tinkering with the connection finished the rest.
