Asked by Mark

Hi,
This is my latest attempt to enable my atheros ar9285 wireless card. I copied that command to my terminal and here's what happened:

ark@Laptop:~$ sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have been trying everything I can find to enable my ar9285 wireless card in a Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop. I still cant enable it. What does all this mean? And what is my next step? HELP! HELP! lol Thanks,
Mark

PS Just noticed the ignoring unknown interface at the end. I had my phone plugged in when I did this so I think thats the "unknown interface"

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

 *-network DISABLED
       description: Wireless interface
product: AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)

1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

So your wireless card is still disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...

There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"

Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....

Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:

rfkill unblock all

sudo rfkill unblock all

Hi,
Thanks for the quick responses. I ran that launchpad thing, thats what got me all that stuff I pasted on the link. I was in the bios and there is no setting I can find for wireless. In fact its really quite a simple bios. A lot less setting to play with than most of the older computers I've seen. I ran the two commands in the terminal and rebooted with no luck. The wireless is still disabled. The computer came with Windows 7 and it was enabled and worked fine in that. I only have Ubuntu on the computer now. I also went through some real long process where I had to make another kernel and a bunch of stuff to enable the driver in the kernel. That didn't work either so I did a fresh install before I tried this last thing posted here.
Thanks,
Mark

If you are sure that wireless is not disabled in the BIOS, then it must be disabled by a certain key combination or hardware switch located on the side or top of the keyboard somewhere....
