Wireless not working since 5/26 update of 10.04

Asked by Sarah E. Kelsey

My wireless card is Atheros AR9285. It had been working in 9.10 and 10.04 until yesterday morning (Thursday, 5/27.) I think maybe it has to do with the updates I got from running Update Manager on 5/26. When I right-click the wireless icon, "Enable wireless" is grayed out. I followed the instructions on this webpage: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/Atheros/AR9285
But "Enable wireless" is still grayed out. I can only connect through an Ethernet cable now. I have tried to connect to three different wireless connections (at a friend's house, at work, and at my house) so I don't think it's an issue with the connection itself.
I also reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 completely, and re-ran the i
Thank you!

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

Regards,

Mark

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx.

The cursor has been flashing for about 10 minutes, so I am assuming it might be done outputting anything. I will resubmit if I was wrong, but here's the output I got.

That's not the whole output. As I already wrote before, the correct command starts with sudo and ends with restart

The command you entered did not end with restart.

The output below (that you sent) seems to indicate that you accidentally disabled wireless by pressing the wireless hardware button or switch on the keyboard or on the side of the laptop. Please look for it. The switch MAY be next to the wireless led light.

Another thing you should do is to check the BIOS settings. Set wireless setting in BIOS to "By application" if possible, or else set it to "enabled", if that option exists. On some laptop models, there are no wireless settings in the BIOS.

There is space above the keys on the laptop keyboard with a light for volume control and the wireless light/button. I did try enabling it that way (yesterday, when this problem first happened, and just now.) It is not working.

I actually have no idea how to check the BIOS settings. How do I do this? Thanks again for your help.

Nevermind, I figured out that it was in the Startup menu. It wasn't exactly intuitive; I enabled something like, virtual drives. I just changed the only option that said "disabled" to "enabled." It worked! Thanks again.

I have been trying everything I can find to enable my ar9285 wireless card in a Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop. I still cant enable it. What does all this mean? And what is my next step?
