I think the following output shows the issue that your wireless card is having:

  Driver Info #0:
    Driver Status: rt2800pci is active
    Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe rt2800pci"
  Driver Info #1:
    Driver Status: rt2860sta is active
    Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe rt2860sta"
  Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
  Attached to: #10 (PCI bridge)

Your Linux kernel has loaded 2 different wireless drivers (rt2800pci and rt2860sta) at the same time for your wireless adapter. And - in my opinion - both these drivers are NOT the right ones to use for your specific wireless adapter.

So you will FIRST need to BLACKLIST these offending drivers.

Run the following command to start editing the
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file using gedit:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

ADD the following 6 lines at the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and SAVE the change to the file:

blacklist rt2800pci
blacklist rt2800lib
blacklist rt2860sta
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2x00pci

Those 6 blacklist lines are NOT commands but configuration lines....

Then please try the following workaround procedure:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/541620/comments/43

Same solution is also given at the following location:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/112252

Then reboot and retest wireless.

Thanks for the quick response...I performed the steps as you suggested. After rebooting, the adapter appears to work, but it will not connect to a network. When I ran SYSTEM->ADMINISTRATION->NETWORK TOOLS, the device is listed as “Unknown Interface (ra0)”. The ethernet adapter is listed as “Ethernet Interface (eth0)”.

When I run iwconfig, I get the following output:
ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"DKRNET" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
           Mode:Managed Frequency=2.422 GHz Access Point: 00:18:4D:22:D5:FB
            Bit Rate=121.5 Mb/s

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
           Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

When I run lshw, I get the following:

bob@bob-p6674y:~$ lshw -C Network

I suggest installing wicd to replace Networkmanager using the following Terminal command:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install wicd

Make sure to set ra0 as the wireless interface name in wicd.

Then connect your PC to the router using a LAN cable.

Log into the router's webinterface using a browser and do the following:

* enable SSID broadcasting on the wireless router
* make sure encryption is temporarily disabled on the router (for testing purposes)
* force the wireless router to communicate at 54 MBps speeds
* make sure that MAC filtering is disabled on the router

The URL for accessing the router should be http://192.168.1.1 or something similar....

After performing these steps, please reboot and retest wireless.

I have no further suggestions....

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Bob DeGrasse for more information if necessary.
