DISABLED Wireless Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe [1814:3090] not working on Asus EEE PC 1001HA in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by Kieht Eames

I am a complete newbie trying to get ubuntu netbook (2.6.32-22 generic) to run on my Asus EEE PC 1001HA.

I have installed it correctly and all works well except the wireless!
The OS runs really well but I keep strangling the cat with my network cable.
I have searched the net and there are many suggestions but I don't understand them!!

I want to be able to point my mouse at a file and instal the drivers and be able to use my netbook. I realise this probably isn't going to happen but would be really grateful if someone could give me some idiot type instructions for the installation of the driver.

The wireless card is a ralink RT 3090 and I can find windows drivers but not the correct files to be added as a windows driver.

I would really like to make this work but brick wall head and collision are all words that come to mind. Sorry if I am stoopid but if I was really bright I wouldn't be writing this so you would have nothing to read!

MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE,

K

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

Am I missing something here ( i feel more stupid than ever) but the link only goes to a list of questions?

Sorry if I am being daft

We just need the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | grep ound; dmesg | grep irmware ; dmesg | grep ipw; dmesg | grep eth; dmesg | grep ath; dmesg | grep b43; dmesg | grep wl; dmesg | grep witch; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Make sure to first read ALL the remarks in the report before trying anything.

Sorry to be so stupid.

sudo -i mkdir -p /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/; touch /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat; service network-manager restart; exit

I simply searched the page for the word workaround, and there it was. This search of web pages isn't a linux thing, its just common sense.

The solution is always easy if you know the answer.

I presume I just type this into terminal do I?

Sorry to be thick but it is a whole new world to me. The first time I reflashed a phone I was terrified I would brick it now I am quite happy to do it for work collegues who are terrified to do it for themselves.

Thanks for your help.

tried that, rebooted machine as well, as it made no noticable difference.

If I go to the network symble next to the battery and right click it shows Wired network disconnected as is the wireless.

If I left click all three options are enabled.

Now I really don't knnow what to do. BUY WINDOWS 7? Sorry!
