Hi,

You need to install the following Broadcom driver package using apt-get or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source

This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)

For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-source:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.

Regards,

Mark

You might try the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer package before giving up on the b43 driver.
I usually install the b43-fwcutter package, and accept the offer of a download from Broadcom and let the package installer pick out the appropriate driver from which to pull the firmware.
Broadcom had many driver choices, and unfortunately, their configurations interfere with each other.
On a new install, the b43 driver will be the default driver, and should work after the appropriate firmware is added to /lib/firmware/b43 (maybe r click on networkmanager and disable/enable wireless or reboot). The ssb and b43 modules will show up when running lsmod, and the wl module will not be shown.
Once other drivers like the STA (or wl? not sure if they are one and the same) are added/enabled, their configurations will suppress the ssb and b43, (see the /etc/modprobe.d blacklist files and entries in blacklist.conf).
Good Luck

In my humble opinion, I still think you need to install bcmwl-kernel-source

That driver worked in the previous question, as you can see here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/133057

That other thread is solved...

The following time-out error you sent us, reminds me of the following thread:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/132551

[ 41.728777] wlan0: authenticate with 1c:af:f7:05:ce:51 (try 1)
[ 41.928065] wlan0: authenticate with 1c:af:f7:05:ce:51 (try 2)
[ 42.128058] wlan0: authenticate with 1c:af:f7:05:ce:51 (try 3)
[ 42.328066] wlan0: authentication with 1c:af:f7:05:ce:51 timed out

So I think you have a total of 2 potential issues:

1) using the wrong driver -> you should use the bcmwl-kernel-source driver instead of the b43 driver

2) using the wrong wireless transmission channel -> choose a different wireless transmission channel on the wireless router -> first try changing the channel to channel 2

If setting the transmission channel to channel 2 does not help, then try selecting the option 'Enable Auto Channel Selection' on the wireless router.

Then power cycle the router and retest wireless.

It looks like you have the old legacy firmware 478.104 in the /lib/firmware/b43 directory.
At least the package firmware-b43legacy-installer has a latest version of 4.178.10.4-4, which seems to be too similar to be a coinsidence.
The package firmware-b43-installer has a latest version of 4.150.10.5-4
the package firmware-b43-lpphy-installer has a latest version of 4.174.64.19-4
Judging from the LP-PHY in the title of this question, I'd try installing the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer after a purge of the firmware-b43legacy-installer and the firmware-b43-installer packages.

If the previously mentioned links have the same hardware as you do, by all means follow their instructions, you are just trying to get something that works. both the b43 and sta driver claim to support the 4312, but you seem to have a low power version and may have special issues.

After purging and starting all over the bcmwl-kernel-source shows my wlan0 as eth1.
The firmware-b43-lpphy-installer now works and i m back where i started. i can view the network but i can't connect. I followed Mark's suggest about the time out error but is not a case of my router. I changed the option to Enable Channel Scan, removed any security to check if just connecting is possible but no success. ofc rebooted the router and the laptop.
here is the interesting part of my dmesg

Looks like you got associated, and then dropped the association when the ap was not seen in a timely basis (500 ms). My beacon interval is 100ms, and is settable by logging into the ap (mine is 192.168.1.1, yours may be different).

It is not working because you are still using the b43 driver and not the bcmwl-kernel-source driver.....

so what would i need to do in order to use it?

According to the latest Terminal output, the wl driver (which is the right driver to use) is being blacklisted.

You can see it in the following output you sent us:

# which ath5k cannot recover. To prevent this condition, stop
blacklist ath_pci
# Warning: This file is autogenerated by bcmwl. All changes to this file will be lost.
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist eth1394
# replaced by p54pci
blacklist prism54
# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist wl
blacklist twl4030_wdt
options iwlagn 11n_disable=1

So you need to find the file in /etc/modprobe.d that contains the following line:

blacklist wl

Remove the line in the file. Save the change.

Reboot and retest wireless.

If wireless is still not working, then do a backup of your home partition, delete the root partition contents and reinstall from the Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD session.

Then reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source

I have no more suggestions to make.

Your PC has non-standard configuration entries which are making it very difficult to get wireless working. It should have worked by now.

That is why I suggest a full reinstall of Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
