10.04 can't see router after last update

Asked by John George

I run a dual-boot system (Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7). Following the latest 10.04 update, 10.04 cannot see my ethernet wired router even though Windows 7 can. Using 10.04 I am now unable to access the internet and therefore cannot update to 10.10.

Any suggestions how to correct this please, as I much prefer to use Ubuntu.

Let me summarize your problem:

-you have a router connect to the internet.
-you connect your computer to this router using an ethernet wire
-after an update to your Lucid Ubuntu, no more internet, while it was working before.

Right ?

I had a similar problem right after I upgraded my Ubuntu, and when I rebooted to Win7, it could not see the router either. I had to power down the system and cold boot it to clear the problem.

That is correct.  Is there any more info you require ?

Thanks for your suggestion, but when running Windows 7, I have no problems with my router.
The problem is only with Ubuntu 10.04, as neither Firefox nor Thunderbird can access the internet since the last automatic Ubuntu 10.04 update.  I have tried to run previous version of 10.04, but that is the same - no internet access.

Regards

Thanks for your feedback, so now the usually silly questions, but always better to ask:

-do you see the network icon in the taskbar (top right corner)
-how does it look like (connected, not connected?)
-if not connected, if you right click on it, is the network enable ?
-if connected, can you right click, then copy paste the output of "connection information" please ?

Thanks !

Dear François,

Thanks for your help. I think I have found the problem. It seems the
last 10.04 automatic upgrade deleted my network address. I have
re-instated it and 10.04 now can access the Internet. Maybe the
pre-release testing was not complete ???

Thanks again.

Version 10.10 you mean? If you installed a beta/RC version, yes, there are risks to have problems of course. It's always recommended to stick with the final version, unless you have a little technical background or a test machine you don't mind to mess with :)

Can you help with this problem?
