rtl819xE:request firmware fail! -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8192] (rev 01) not working on Samsung N130 in Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04
I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10,04 on my Samsung N130. Although I can access the Internet by WLAN using Windows XP, under Ubuntu this did not work until I hooked up the netbook via cable to my router. Then I could access Firefox.
I understand that when there is both a cable and a wlan connection the former takes precedence. But I would prefer to use the wlan and disconnect the cable.
My version of Ubuntu does not appear to have a "Network Manager", just "Network Connections". Attempting to edit a wireless connection I am confronted with unanswerable questions about SSID, BSSID, mode, MAC address, MTU, etc.
The four books I have on Ubuntu provide helpful(?) advice about getting an IP address via DHCP, ESSID and defining a WEP key.
Can you please provide a solution for a linux newbie which does not require me to have a degree in Acronymology?

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread
Regards,
Mark

But what next?
Trying to open the Network Connections now has no effect, and I still cannot find a Network Manager...
Should I switch off, remove the cable and restart, or what?
With many thanks for your quick help.

It did not work for you, because you ran the whole procedure BEFORE installing git-core.
Now that git-core is installed, rerun this procedure:

After rerunning the procedure, reboot and retest wireless....

Please follow these instructions to enable the lucid-proposed repository:
https:/
Then run the following commands to install the newest version of linux-firmware:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-firmware
Then please reboot and retest wireless....
If that does not help, then I unfortunately have no more suggestions to make.

As suggested I enabled the lucid-proposed repository and ran
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-firmware.
On rebooting without the lan cable I still could not use firefox.
Perhaps, instead of sending me reams of code, you could tell me the answers I might type in to the wireless page of the Network Connections, (SSID, etc.). Or alternatively, tell me how to install the Network Manager.
As a newbie, I have been very disappointed with this first attempt to get to grips with Ubuntu, though impressed by the speed of your replies.
I have had no problems using WLAN with my XP installation...

Roger

There is a good reason why I sent you so many "reams of code".
Those reams of code are attempts to solve the issue your wireless card is experiencing. The error is "rtl819xE:request firmware fail!" and the code I sent was a recommended workaround from the following bugreport:
https:/
Now if NetworkManager is not visible in the bottom bar or top bar of your screen, then I suggest replacing it with wicd, which is an alternative wireless network manager.
You can install wicd using these commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd
But remember that the REAL issue/error "rtl819xE:request firmware fail!" needs to be fixed before you can attempt to use NetworkManager or wicd.
More info about wicd here:

sudo aptitude install wicd
But remember that the REAL issue/error "rtl819xE:request firmware fail!"
needs to be fixed before you can attempt to use NetworkManager or wicd."
So I see little point in installing wicd until the REAL issue can be fixed.
As a newbie, I have no idea how to fix it.
Despite your valiant efforts, it seems you cannot fix it either! Or have you an alternative solution?
Best wishes
Roger

Mark Rijckenberg proposed the following answer:
There is a good reason why I sent you so many "reams of code".
Those reams of code are attempts to solve the issue your wireless card is experiencing. The error is "rtl819xE:request firmware fail!" and the code I sent was a recommended workaround from the following bugreport:
https:/
Now if NetworkManager is not visible in the bottom bar or top bar of
your screen, then I suggest replacing it with wicd, which is an
alternative wireless network manager.
You can install wicd using these commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd
But remember that the REAL issue/error "rtl819xE:request firmware fail!"
needs to be fixed before you can attempt to use NetworkManager or wicd.
More info about wicd here:

* Driver v14 from Realtek (1.6 MiB, application/x-tar)
I've read on this forum thread : http://
I mailed them today and Realtek (kidman) sends me the driver v14 which works on 64 bits (tested on kubuntu lucid). It facts, this is the same driver for 32 and 64 bits but older versions only work on 32 bits (prior to v13 I think as both v13 and v14 work on 64 bits).
On my Samsung R580 laptop, it disconnects often but it is usable. When it disconnects, sometimes, it can not reconnect automatically so I have to unload the module and reload it, then it works again for some time.
I've attached it.
Hope this help
"
So you will need to compile and install the v14 Realtek driver (https:/
You can test this driver using both the 32 bit and 64 edition of Ubuntu 10.04
Can you help with this problem?
