Asked by marbuntu

Hello:

I am using a Dell 1525 Inspiron Laptop running 10.04 and I have at the top appears to be a wireless connection but when I open firefox to browse the web I have no connection and I cannot view web pages. I do have a broadcom wireless card.

Below is more information on my computer. I would very much appreciate the help. Thanks.

I got the instructions from here:
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

Just do it from GUI or from the shell, not both.

Ubuntu:
------
Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
Choose the Broadcom STA wireless driver
Activate

Sometimes the driver does not show up in the Hardware Drivers choices. In
this case, try reintalling the driver from the GUI or shell like this:

From the GUI:
Package Manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager). Click the
Reload button in the upper left corner of Synaptic to refresh your index then
search for and reinstall the package named bcmwl-kernel-source.

From the shell:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

In either GUI or text case, after reinstalling, reboot your machine.

Now go back to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
and you should see the driver enabled and working.

Hi Federico:

I did as you asked but still no luck.

From the GUI:
Package Manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager). Click the
Reload button in the upper left corner of Synaptic to refresh your index then
search for and reinstall the package named bcmwl-kernel-source.

In either GUI or text case, after reinstalling, reboot your machine.
Now go back to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
and you should see the driver enabled and working

I am using a 2Wire325 modem and I am inputting my nine digit key into the box that is asking me for my WEP 40/128-bit key and when I click connect the little wireless symbol at the time pulsates up and down but it keeps returning a popup box telling me that authentication required by wireless network. Is there anything else I can try? I do show that the driver Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated. Thanks.

Try WPA instead of WEP. In yout logs you can read this:

IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1

So when creating the connection choose the WPA option.

I thought I'd try to setup a new wireless connection in the Network Connections. The first tab I have reads "Wireless" and it is asking me for SSID which I put in 2wire and teh "Mode" is set for "infrastructure", the BSSID is bland and so is the MAC address. The MTU box reads "automatic". Under the Wireless Security tab, I chose WPA & WPA2 Personal but it will not accept my nine digit numeric key. Instead it wants a password. I don't know of any password that works in that box. The IPv4 setting tab reads that the "method" is set for Automatic (DHCP) and everything else is grayed out. The IPv6 settings tab reads that the "method" is set for "Ignore" and everything else is grayed out. I tried the Dynamic WEP (802.1x) but it too wants an identity and private key password which I don't know or have, which leaves me with the WEP 40/128-bit key for the security. I put in my nine digit key and it won't accept it a connection. I've rebooted and in the Network Connections it looks like it has setup an auto connection called "Auto 2wire325" but that doesn't appear to be working either. I am completely lost. Thank you for the help.

If you install wicd via wired connection you can tell wicd your wireless device is eth1

i believe network manager only expects wlan0, wicd may help

Hello Actionparsnip:

I am sorry but I don't know anything about wicd. I am new to Linux and am trying to learn as I go along. Can you explain what you said to me so that I can understand on what to do and where to find it and how to do it? Thank you.

use a wired connection and run:

sudo apt-get install wicd; sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager*

or you can maybe use the livecd to install the package.

In my experience, wicd seems more flexible than network-manager although network-manager can connect 3G which wicd currently cannot.

Personally I ALWAYS pull out network manager and install wicd.

Glad you got the gold.
