too much tweaking!
Does everyone have to spend several hours each day to get Ubuntu to work? I can't get sound. I can't play DVDs. I can't watch Netflix. I hate Microsoft, but I don't have time to spend hours of research every time I need to use my computer.

Netflix doesn't run on Ubuntu. You can ONLY get it running in a virtualbox.
You can get DVD playback by running:
sudo wget --output-
This will not need redoing and is permanent.
To fix sound can you please give the make / model of your system as well as the output of:
wget -O alsa-info.sh http://
Thanks

You might like to look at ubuntu tweak, which simplifies the tweaking process.

in reply to the question, no I don't spend hours tweaking every day. Once the OS is setup then you rarely need your own pasword short of logging in and updates.

Thanks for responding to my rant!
I have an HP dc5750s SFF. I have no other OS on it but Ubuntu. The sound card (Realtek 2 channel ALC260 codec) was running great with XP before I loaded Ubuntu. Sound comes out of front jack but not the rear jack. I installed a driver from RealTek but nothing changed.
