Codec + Mixer: Realtek ALC260 - ALC260 Analog [ALC260 Analog] Audio device [0403]: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) [1002:4383] - rear speakers not working on HP Compaq DC5750S/A64-38/39 120/4k US (HP Compaq dc5750 Small Form Factor) in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (front speakers are working)

I have the HDA-Intel HDA ATI SB sound system. When using Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, all sound ports work properly. Upon upgrading to 10.04, only the front plugs work. I have viewed several videos, went through numerous ubuntu help forums and tried everything suggested, yet still there is not sound from the rear speakers. In my Pulse Volume Control, Output Devices Tab, it says under Rear Center, Silence. I do not have surround sound speakers, just cheap Dell speakers that work fine...just not from the rear jack on 10.04.

Please use gnome-alsamixer to UNMUTE and increase volume for the "Front" and "Aux" channels.

If that does not help, please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In gedit, scroll down and add these 2 lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=hp

If those alsa-base.conf options don't work, please try these 2 lines instead and reboot after making the change:

Don't forget to reboot your pc after every change you make to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.
So add the hp model option, reboot, retest sound via headphones AND speakers. Then - if necessary - replace the hp model option with the hp-dc7600 model option, reboot and retest sound via headphones AND speakers.

Also make sure to run alsamixer after each change and make sure all channels remain unmuted after each reboot.

Once I did what you said, I had to open the Volume Control/Output and change from Simultaneous output, still no sound then I changed it back to Internal Audio Analog Stereo and bam, the rear plug is now working. Thank you for your assistance. This has been on the backburner for over one month now as no solution was available.
