How can I define a root file system

I am trying to install but when I click on install I get an error telling me to use the partitioning tool because there is no ROOT file system. In the disk tool there is no partitioning tool. how cam I make this drive a root system?

When you are settling up partitioning you need to set an Ext4 partition as '/' and this will be used as root.

Thank you I try after a rebuild my hard drive it looks like I hosed up the
boot sector for win 7 and win 7 can't fix it

After re building my drive I tried to install ubuntu I got it to install
with your help but it crashed the hole hard drive again I am not going to
try I may just go buy Red Hat
