dvd drive not recognised

ubuntu 12.04 installed and updated in a sony vaio vgn-sz330p and it doesn't see the dvd drive in disk utility or any where... please advise.

What is the output of :

sudo lshw -C disk; sudo lshw -C drive; lsb_release -a; uname -a

its a terminal command. press CTRL + ALT + T

it gives me the hard drive info and then says "No LSB modules are available." and then goes on w/ubuntu info.

how do i check? when i go to the go drop down and click computer i used to see the file system and disc drive (in older version of linux) but now all i see is the file system and no other drive.

is there a way to "force" it to see it or should i do a whole new re-install or...?
