Installing programs

Asked by Daniel R. O'Connor

Would some one please help me with this. I can't figure out how to install anything on my Ubuntu computer. I have downloaded several things and the only option I ever get is to extract the files. For example I downloaded the vista.tar.gz transformation pack and I can't install it. Would some one please tell me how, I would appreciate it very much.

Each program has it's own method of installation in Ubuntu. Sometimes there will be packages in the repositories (Add or Remove Programs/Package manager) Sometimes there will be something called '.DEB' packages which you can simply double click on and click install. Other times there will be packages in '.tar.gz/bz2' format which will either have instructions to install, a .sh file that you would have to execute, or the files would simply have to be copied to a proper folder. I hope that helps.
