Can gfxboot be used for graphics in GRUB?

Asked by spinstartshere

I have found pages on the web detailing ways of installing gfxboot on Ubuntu installations so that when booting, a screen similar to the one seen on openSUSE is seen. However, I have not followed any of these because I am wary of installing a file off the Internet. I noticed the gfxboot and gfxboot-theme-ubuntu packages in Synaptic, and have installed them hoping this would be enough to get the openSUSE-esque boot experience, but clearly it isn't as I am still greeted by a text-based screen.

In short, is there a way the packages in the repositories can be used to produce a graphical screen when I boot my computer, or are the packages intended for other uses?

Install startupmanager.
This utility allows you to modify the way the system boots.

If you're only seeing text it means that your setup either can't support the boot (doubtful) or that it's set to text only. I believe this is the nosplash option.

I have that package installed, but which options need to be selected in order for gfxboot to work? Also, is there a list on the internet of unsupported hardware? My computer is an Acer Aspire 5920 (http://preview.tinyurl.com/acer-5920), if that helps.

Wow.... Launchpad Janitor is annoying...

Sorry for the delay, I've been extremely busy.

In startupmanager there is an Appearance tab. What you're interested in is the Bootloader theme. You will need to install a theme via this route as well. There's also another way to manage the usplash which I can't remember.

In order for this to display, you will need to make sure you are making the menu actually show, otherwise the 3,2,1 part will show without the theme. You can get some themes from gnome-look.org.

It takes a little playing to get it working just right and you can break your entire boot process. Keep a backup of /boot and have fun. Once you get everything just right, it's a fun process.

I personally go with the text only route, but I do remember having a lot of fun with this.

Can you help with this problem?
