inspiron 710m (ubuntu 8.04): shutdown,restart problem

I am unable to shutdown or restart my inspiron 710m.every time i does it it gets stuck (black screen & power light on) and i have to shutdown by power button.

i cannot return from hibernate or suspend mode.
i am using ubuntu 8.04

plzzzzzz help me.

Please try the following:
open a terminal
type "sudo shutdown"
press enter
it will ask for your password, enter it and press enter.
your system should shutdown, if it does the same as you describe above in your question try pressing CTRL+ALT+F8 and go back to CTRL+ALT+F1, try to look at every F key that way, if one of them contains any info please post it so we can identify whether this is a bug or not (I personally think this is a bug but I could be wrong).

Thanks anyway!
i have tried pressing CTRL+ALT+F8, CTRL+ALT+F1 and tried at every F
key that way, but nothing is happening.
