need gcc-4.4.2 for certain ruby libs

Asked by Joel VanderWerf

Hi,

gcc-4.4.1 causes a problem with date parsing when building certain ruby libs (the "syntax" gem).

This has been discussed on ruby-talk[1]. One user (he is the maintainer of the mingw32 build of ruby) reported that 4.4.2 fixes the problem.

Since 4.4.2 is a "bug fix" release, according to the gcc developers[2], will this show up as an update in karmic? Or is there a way to install it in karmic, short of building from source? Is there a .deb somewhere?

I tried using the karmic-proposed and karmic-backports repositories, but gcc-4.4.2 is apparently not there either.

Thanks for any help,
Joel

There's no way gcc would be updated to 4.4.2 in karmic, because it may break things. However, it may be possible to get a fix for the specific problem you have with the compiler in karmic-updates.

Are you sure? The list on that page says it has 4.4.0-5ubuntu1.1, which
isn't what I'm looking for.

Did you really mean 4.2.2? (I do have gcc 4.3 installed, as well as
4.4.1, so maybe I'll go back to that. Seems safer than going all the way
back to 4.2.)
