Organizing Firefox Unsorted Bookmarks

Asked by RayArdia

Using Ubuntu 12.04 and Mozilla Firefox 17.0.
Bookmarks generally work OK but am having a problem sorting/organizing the Unsorted bookmarks.
I open Library and when I select any folder (other than Unsorted bookmarks) the contents of the folder are shown in the right-hand pane ready for manipulation.
This does not happen with the Unsorted Bookmarks folder. How can these unsorted bookmarks be organized?

Do you realy have any Unsorted bookmark ? Try to copy and paste a bookmark from the other folders to the Unsorted bookmark's folder.

Thanks

I do have a lot of bookmarks which have never been included in folders and had assumed that they would be included under Unsorted Bookmarks in Library. They are not.
I CAN copy & paste, and drag and drop bookmarks from any folder into Unsorted bookmarks and can return them to their original folders.
The missing bookmarks, (shown in 'Firefox-Bookmarks' but of course not able to be manipulated simply because clicking on one brings up the URL to which it is related) are apparently completely missing in Library.
If I could remember how to attach a screenshot or to I could make things clearer!

Try to click at "Unsorted bookmarks" and then click "View" . Maybe you've changed something there.
I just tested it (added 5-6 sites) and all sites are listed under "Unsorted Bookmarks" in Library.

When you say 'Try to click at "Unsorted bookmarks" and then click "View"' are you in Library?
Either way, whether from Bookmarks-Unsorted Bookmarks-View or:-
Bookmarks-Show all Bookmarks (opens Library) - Unsorted Bookmarks-Views, it is not working for me.
How do I show you the screenshots?

You can make folders for shortcuts and have submenus in the bookmarks....

Andrew, thanks for comment and I think I understand what I COULD do; however I don't think that would solve the problem.
In addition to all the foregoing I now also notice when in Library an entry marked From Google Chrome, when expanded this shows all the folders as in Bookmarks Menu, and this too has a 'folder' called Unsorted Bookmarks. When I open THIS Unsorted folder 8 OF THE MISSING BOOKMARKS DO APPEAR IN THE rh PANE,

Sorry, trying to do too many things at once! What is the simplest way of showing you the screenshots I've taken?

You can't paste screen-shots here I'm afraid its text only but you can place a link. If you can get it on the web you can link to it.

When I try and organise my bookmarks in Firefox I see no problem.

Selecting "Bookmarks" > "Show all Bookmarks" from the menu a new window opens. I maximise that. This window has a list of folders on the Left hand plane and bookmarks on the right. From here I can just drag and drop to organise. How is your system different?

Hi Warren, have attached screenshots to this email, is that acceptable?
I think my problems stem from having been forced to use Google Chrome
fro a time when Firefox was unresponsive. The screenshot sequence may
help explain.

Sorry no screen shots. If you use the forum instead of email you will see its text only.

See here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/214984

We can only see screenshots if you can find a website to host them then you can link to that

Can't you just drag and drop?

You should be able to drag the folders from the "Bookmarks toolbar" to the "Bookmarks menu" then tidy up from there.

It appears that at some point you have exported your folders from Firefox to Chrome and have since imported from Chrome back to Firefox, this probably means some bookmarks are duplicates. This is going a a bit laborious but should not be difficult.

(*) Expand all the files in "Bookmarks Toolbar" rename the bottom folder "AAAA" for example and drag tp "Bookmarks Menu".

Now Expand "Bookmarks Menu" Drag the bookmarks from "AAAA" to where you want them ignoring duplicates.

Delete Folder "AAAA" and repeat from (*) until all done.

Not too difficult

Will try all that just as soon as I have a quiet hour or so to spare. Many thanks.
Have marked this question solved, 'cos there isn't a box marked 'fingers crossed'!
