a new icon i didn't install & don't want, called "a.tribalfusion" is on the bottom of my screen with mozilla. how can i get rid of it?

Asked by michael combs

today i noticed an icon i hadn't seen before, and when i clicked on it i got "a.tribalfusion.com" and about 2-300 characters following. i looked it up and lots' of people are being invaded apparently by this unwanted pop-up commercial ... malware?
i right-clicked on my firefox icon, hoping i'd have some security settings or an ability to block this. it creeps me out having it there. my computer is my personal space, & if i didn't invite you there i don't want to look at you!

Information needed. What OS and version? What release of Mozilla are you using?

release 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel Linux 2.6.31-22-generic
GNOME 2.30.2

hmm... i go to my Firefox icon, right-click on it to see if it gives me
any info so i can answer your second question about Mozilla. i don't see
anything there. also went to applications and right-clicked on mozilla. i
thought mozilla and firefox are the same thing.
can you tell me where to find the info you're requesting on the second
question? sorry, i live off-grid, and am not able to access the internet for
days or weeks at a time sometimes.
  'preciate your time,
  mc

"i noticed an icon i hadn't seen before"

Where was the icon?

Please take a screenshot (tap the Print Screen key), post it on the web (you can use a site like http://postimage.org), and post a link to it here.

Generally speaking, a website can contain links to other websites, and can contain links that, when clicked, cause pop-up windows to be created. It is very difficult to maintain full functionality on many websites if pop-ups are blocked so stringently as to prevent a new window from being created when you click on a link.

If you are not willing to have whatever website a link is for opened in your web browser, you should generally not click the link. What did you think would happen when you clicked a strange link on a website?

Are you now experiencing some persistent problem or undesirable, strange, or unexplained behavior? Or did you just click a link once which opened a website you did not like, without any subsequent problems?

To provide the second piece of information that michael (yellupcm-gmail) requested, open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:

apt-cache policy firefox

That will provide the exact version of the Firefox package that is installed.

hey eliah,
   thank you for answering me.
i right-clicked on the unwanted icon and chose the "remove from panel
option. this seems to have at least gotten this unwanted commercial invader
icon out of sight. sending it to the trash did not seem to be an option.

i did not click on any links that i remember, am unsure how it came to
infest my workspace. i am familiar with links in websites, and am cautious
about those i click on. this was different, an icon at the bottom of my
screen, not a link in a website.
anyway, 'preciate your time. seems i was able to solve it for now.
     be well,
              mc

So, where was the icon? Was it on your top panel? In the Unity launcher (on the left side of the screen)?

Is this problem related to Firefox at all?

(I'm assuming that you still want help figuring out how the icon got there, as you have not marked this question as Solved. However, if you are satisfied as things are now, you can mark this Solved at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/167331. You can always reopen the question if the problem recurs, or post a new question if you experience a different problem you want help with.)

it was on the bottom right side of my screen, & the thing that freaked me
out was that "send to trash" wasn't an option, & i had no conscious memory
of inviting this never-seen-before
icon into my desktop, and it performed no useful function other than to sell
me crap i don't want. i also saw other people's frustrations with same, so i
made a crusade of throwing it into outer darkness.
but once a ubuntu buddy told me "remove from panel" would be an adequate
solutin, i used that. i'll go take it off of active problems, and thank you
for helping, eliah.

It was probably a Launchpad glitch. You've successfully marked this question as Solved with post #7. If you experience similar problems marking questions as Solved in the future, you may want to post about them at https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad so they can be investigated.
