Upgraded from 10 to 11 was not good

Asked by Brak Little

Upgraded from 10 to 11 went terribly wrong. The internet drops all the time and has much slower speed. Cannot watch videos from any sites. Tried to dump 11 to reload 10 and will not work

If you want Maverick or Lucid you will need to format and reinstall.

When the network drops, run:

dmesg | tail

what is output?

The line is a pipe. You can copy and paste to the terminal so you dn't need to worry what it is. The clipboard will manage it for you. The command will output text (nothing to do with internet, it's just text), copy the text and paste here as an update

I would recommend you reinstall 10.10, then burn an installation dvd of 11.04 and reinstall that way.

I tried that. 11.04 has this thing locked up.

It is digitally impossible for the operating system to prevent the Ubuntu 10.10 installer from formatting your hard drive. It seems that you are trying to format your hard drive with Ubuntu 11.04 installed.

Follow these steps to resolve your problem:

1. Make sure that you have a Ubuntu 10.10 CD burned and handy.

2. Shut down your computer with the CD in the disk drive.

3. Boot into the CD. How to do this varies by computer. If you do not know how to do this, refer to this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

4. Wait for the operating system to load. This may take a while because the computer is trying to boot from a CD.

5. Use the Ubuntu installer to remove completely Ubuntu 11.04 and install Ubuntu 10.10.

I tried it again and as of this moment the system seems to be frozen or
still trying to remove 11.04. It has been approximately 20 hours ago that
the system booted from the 10.10 cd. For some reason 11.04 will not allow
anything to reformat the hard drive. I even tried to reformat with
windows. The computer was working perfectly prior to this upgrade.

I'll try it again. I did try this but it did not work. The developers
should send out a patch to repair the problems.

Try gParted, then. gParted is a tool included in the LiveCD. Use it to remove the problematic partitions.

Boot into the LiveCD of Ubuntu 11.04. If you've got Unity, just search "gparted" in the dash. If you use classic desktop, it's in System >> Administration >> gParted Partition Editor (or similar name).

Can you help with this problem?
