graphics appear on screen for short 1-2 seconds and then vanish

Asked by Joe Gunto

When I am on my bank's brokerage sight, and click on a link to graphs/charts, news, or other info on a particular stock; the page appears, but then goes away after only one to two seconds. Obviously the requested page is being located and loaded, but it doesn't stay for very long.
Ubuntu 6.10 and Firefox Browser (I think 2.0)
I have found out that the only tab on the site that doesn't work correctly is the News and Research tab.
I have a suspicion that the information offered on that tab is from a third party, and that is the reason it is not working properly. I have contacted the investment service by e-mail to ask for assistance.

Does this happen with any other sites? Does the brokerage site use Flash?

It would help if you described what you meant by "goes away". Does the browser window go completely blank? Does resizing the window help? How about scrolling?

This could be simply a layout problem with the web site you are visiting. If the brokerage doesn't test their site in Firefox, it may not be compatible with firefox. If you use Adblock, try disabling that.

If you are running any fancy visual effects (like compiz, or beryl), disable them and see if that helps.

I haven't noticed it happening with other sites
I just went on the brokerage site on my laptop which uses Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 and Firefox for the browser and when I clicked on news and reseach tab, there was no problem. The information came up on the screen and stayed right there.
I am not sure about flash being used on the brokerage website
I do not use compiz or beryl yet so that should not be the problem
I am using Ubuntu 6.04 LTS on my desktop and not Ubuntu 6.10 as I said in the original question
BY GOES AWAY: I mean the information comes up on the lower part of the screen, and then only that information vanishes. The tabs from the site, and the side bar with a box to type in Stock Market trading symbols to lookup infor about quotes and trading statistics stays right where it was. There is a section at the bottom 2/3 of the screen on the left side (about 3/4 of the screen side to side that changes as I go from trading to watchlists to stock positions, etc. That is where the graphs or news or research appears as it should, but then goes away and I am left with that part of the screen being blank.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have checked the things you asked about, and I have done a check on the website I am using to invest. I discovered that the only tab on the site that doesn't work properly is the News and Research tab, and the access to News about a particular stock available through a drop down box accessable when I place the pointer over the stock symbol, when it appears anywhere on the page.
I have contacted the site for any advice they might offer. Thanks again for you suggestions. I have flash on my system, and don't have Adblock as far as I know.

It sounds like a flash player problem. Can you right click your mouse in the blank area and get the flash menu?
Try going to Dells site and configure a computer, if you don't get a nice picture of computer parts in the options list, then it is flash.
I can't get it to work with fully updated 7.04.

Thanks for your suggestions. I went onto Dell's site and was able to see all the computer parts you talked about, and configure a system without any problems.
When I right clicked in the area of my investment site that goes blank after a couple seconds, I did not see anything about Flash. I am still waiting for a reply from the investment wedsite, so I will keep trying, I may give them a call on the phone, if I don't hear something soon.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Joe,

This sounds like either a problem with Firefox and the site, or a Flash problem. I recommend that you update your 7.04 to a more recent Ubuntu, as a more recent Firefox or Flash may have fixed the problem.

The easiest way to do this would be pressing Alt+F2, then typing "update-manager -d" and pressing enter. This should start the process of updating to 7.10.

Good luck.

I still am not sure what is going on with the graphs and charts on the investment site. I have Ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop, and the graphics work just fine on it. Sorry you are having trouble with your 7.04. I am not qualified to say whether my 7.04 is completely updated and has all the bells and whistles I may be able to add. It just happens to work well as it is. The person who answered my questions from the investment site stated that the sight does not work well with Firefox. It does with my Firefox on the Ubuntu 7.04 though. Since I am using 6.04 on my desktop, and the new Ubuntu 7.10 is available for upgrading our systems as of tomorrrow, Oct. 18th, I may just go ahead and upgrade my desktop through the upgrade system. I will have to check out how long the downloads and installs will take.

Thanks for you suggestions

I have decided to go ahead and update to 7.10 on the 18th when it is availabe for downlosd and upgrading. I wasn't aware that the ugrade was available so soon until I started trying to solve this problem. I have been staying with 6.04 LTS, but now I think it is time to try the new Ubuntu. 7.04 has been working well on my laptop, and I am able to access the information on the investment site, that I can't get on the desktop. I think I will go ahead and work through upgrading version by version until I get the new Ubuntu 7.10 onto my desktop computer.

Thanks for you suggestions

Hi,

I have a similar problem with my bank's online account information
page. While this isn't a "fix", I've found that if I turned off the page
style option I can at least see the info on the page.
On the Firefox menu: View->Page Style->No Style

Hope this helps

I just tried changing the page display as you suggested, and I am able to access
reports and information. Thanks for the tip. I am going to upgrade my distro from
6.04 LTS to 6.10, and then on up to 7.04 and the new 7.10. I hope that I will be able to just go to my investment site, and access what I want after that. I use Ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop and it seems to work just fine.

Thanks again
