Ubuntu 10.10 stopped playing videos and music but plays a tune when booting up

Asked by Aaron Remley

About two days ago, Ubuntu 10.10 with Firefox v.3.6.12 stopped playing videos and music, but plays a tune when booting up Ubuntu.

The only thing I have done is remove Evolution Mail/Conferencing and KDE Word in that time.

I went to a music site that said the Flash was installed but could not be started. I checked the plugins and many are there for videos and music, but none are showing as "being used" with a check mark next to them.

Windows Media Center was previously installed and when Microsoft Updates were made (14 or them) the computer restarted but Windows would not boot up again (even using Last Known Good etc.) so I ordered a Ubuntu 10.4 CD and loaded it on the system.

I now have Ubuntu 10.10 and it has been working very well until two days ago, when the videos and music stopped playing.

Description: GNU Shockwave Flash (SWF) player
GNU Gnash is a free GPL'd SWF player. It runs as a standalone application on
either the desktop or embedded devices, or may be used as a plugin for several
popular browsers. It supports playing media from a disk or streaming over a
 network connection.

GNU Gnash is based on GameSWF and supports most SWF v7 features and some SWF v8
and v9. SWF v10 is not supported by GNU Gnash.

Included in the Gnash is an XML based messaging system, as specified in the SWF
specification. This lets a SWF animation communicate over a TCP/IP socket, and
parse the incoming XML message. This lets an animation be a remote control for
 other devices or applications.

This package includes the standalone GTK+-based player that use AGG as the
 rendering backend.
