Unable to edit photos in Picknik from flickr.com

Asked by Tom

Since I switched from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.01, I have not been able to use my Picknik account from within flickr.com. Picknik allows me...a professional photographer, to edit photos online. Picknik keeps telling me I need Flash player. I already knew this and installed Flash Player 10 several times with no luck. I even started over and used the Flash plugin nonfree to no avail. Any help on this subject would be helpful as I have already visited all the Ubuntu help sections I know of. I have spent many hours on this problem.
Thank you,
Tom

Are you using Firefox? Check about:plugins, it should look like:

Shockwave Flash

    File name: libflashplayer.so
    Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22

application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes
application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player spl Yes

If there is anything else in there that says something about flash, make
sure you remove it. If it looks different than the flash plugin is not
installing for you correctly.

Thanks for the info friend.
Picknik tells me I need macromedia Flash player and gives me the link to Flash Player 10. I have xine plugins also installed. Will these plugins interfere? Problem not yet solved.

Also, where is "About:Plugins?"

The media player plugins are not going to interfere. Does the
about:plugins show you having the correct flash plugin installed? Are
there any other plugins trying to use the same mime type (swf)?

Type about:plugins in the firefox address bar.

This is what about:flash shows;

application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes
application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player spl Yes

Default Plugin

    File name: libnullplugin.so
The default plugin handles plugin data for mimetypes and extensions that are not specified and facilitates downloading of new plugins.

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled No

Hope this helps ya friend. Do I need to disable Futuresplash player?

No other mime type (swf's) being used. Shows libflashplayer.so installed. Flashplayer 10 to be exact.

No futuresplash is fine.

What is shown right above those lines, should be a bold "Shockware
Flash" followed by a filename and version information.

Sorry I'm answering these messages out of order :)

Are you able to access other flash websites?

I can access and use Youtube just fine. I can see flash websites but I don't visit but a few...like "overclocker.com, and foxnews.com."

Helloooo! Is anyone gonna give me an answer to my problem? I cannot get flash to work on Myspace. Adobe Flash is installed....again....with no luck. About:plugins is normal with no swf conflicts. All looks good with no flash working. Why? Am I gonna have to purchase a copy of Windows 7?

Maybe someone could give me detailed instructions on how to remove flash and reinstall it properly. I never got an answer to my problem. If Linux cannot handle the Internet then it is trash. I am very disappointed in the stability and functionality of Ubuntu. Free is still not the way to go. I just don't understand why someone can't make something as simple as flash work on the Internet. It seems this would be a top priority of Linux community but there is little on the net about it. I could work with other shortcomings with Ubuntu but the Internet is the most important aspect of computing and it seems that Linux has dropped the ball on a user friendly product to market to the masses. I am quite disappointed.
