error: ASSERT: *** Search: _installLocation: engine has no file!

Asked by rajeev

I use ubuntu intrepid 8.10 and firefox 3.
I just installed wine, but haven't used it for anything yet. I'm not sure if this would have an impact.
I just want my old beloved firefox working like she used to.
If I try to enter something into the search engine box in the upper right, before I hit enter, this message pops up. This came up when I typed in spaces:
"ASSERT: *** Search: _installLocation: engine has no file!
Stack Trace:
0:ENSURE_WARN(false,_installLocation: engine has no file!,2147500037)
1:()
2:()
3:()
4:epsGetAttr([object Object],hidden)
5:()
6:()
7:currentEngine()
8:( ,searchbar-history,null,[xpconnect wrapped nsIAutoCompleteObserver])"

If I type something in the search box, it shows up in the error message here: 8:( "whatever i typed", searchbar-history...
If I open a new window it has no functionality and a similar message pops up if I try to type something into the address bar.

Note: I consistently get this on Jaunty if Firefox-3.5 is installed, but Firefox-3.0 is not. Reinstalling Firefox-3.0 fixes the problem in 3.5 for me. It looks like 3.5 is looking to the 3.0 install for the list of available search engines.
