multiple e-mail addresses under one account

Asked by glk.interests

I have multiple e-mail addresses under one account and cannot seem to find the correct way for all five mail boxes to be displayed under the one account using Unbuntu's mail system. I do not see a separate identities menu or a method to have the folders all generated for each mail box. Please advise how multiple e-mail addresses can be displayed under a single account. Thank you. Gary L. Kerr

Hi Gary,
What email application are you using? Is it Evolution?

Have you looked at Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Accounts -> Add Account ?

Jonathon

Jonathon:
Yes, I have tried that course. Unfortunately, the display in Evolution in the extreme left column does not show the two mailbox data that I have already entered. In addition, it only displays one set of "inbox", "sent", etc. folders and not a separate listing for the second of five mailboxes. Under the second displayed listing, the word "unmatched" is shown and I find no way to link or match that display with the second mailbox data already entered.
Wondering if you have any other ideas? Gary

Hi Gary,
That is odd. The behaviour I get is more like this screengrab (I'm at work right now and we use Windows here so I can't show you my own setup).

http://lions-wing.net/lessons/customize/read-mail-evolution.png

Are you trying to use POP3 or IMAP to connect to your mail server? I use IMAP and so the email doesn't appear in the "On This computer" list, it's shown below with a top level folder for each different account. I use one IMAP and one Exchange server one and they both appear in this manner.

Kind regards,
Jonathon

I meant to say: try accessing one of your accounts via IMAP if you can.

Hi Jonathon:
I appreciate your offerings; however, upon trying to add a mailbox via
IMAP rather than as a POP, the only change was in the display of the
name of the mailbox. No other action, such as creating the "inbox",
"sent". etc. folders occurred. When I tried clicking on the newly
created mailbox, the display was "loading..." and no further action.
In the windows environment, Comcast.net is a "POP", but I'm not
familiar with what "IMAP" means. Would you elaborate when you have a
few minutes? Thanks, Gary

Johathon:
Are you trying to use POP3 or IMAP to connect to your mail server? ===
I was told went I set up the account with Comcast to use a POP listing.
That is what I did. I tried the IMAP and while the listing is now
separate, no connection seems to occur. The error message displayed in
the bottom line is "error while scanning folders in IMAP server
mail.comcast.net". Perhaps there is a different code to use for IMAP
than what I am using via POP as "mail.comcast.net". If that is true,
then do you know that correct syntex?
By the way, these messages are being sent to you via my original setup
on a separate computer using POP in that computer. If I set up the new
computer w/Ubuntu and try mailing anything, all mail goes into one
mailbox without the ability to separate it into the various other mailboxes.

Hey Gary,
You're right; Comcast is POP3 only.

Here's a reasonable explanation of POP3 which links to an IMAP one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_Office_Protocol.

I don't know what to suggest now I'm afraid; I can't replicate the problem because I can't use POP3 to test.

Can you filter the email by the 'to address'? I presume all the mail for one account will be addressed to <email address hidden> and the other to <email address hidden>?

Thank you for continuing to try to help resolve this problem. I do
appreciate your time and efforts. I have a total of five separate
e-mailboxes because of five separate and distinct uses. When using the
POP, none of the separate e-mail addresses have any distinct
pigeon-hole, nor "inbox" nor "sent" nor "draft", etc. folders. In other
words, all mail goes into a category called "on this computer". So,
even if I could figure a way to filter the subject or sender, there are
no separate folders in which to put the mail.
It seems as though "Evolution" does not envision a person using
separate mailboxes within a "POP" type service. Perhaps another mail
service client would be easier to use than Evolution. If so, do you
have any suggestions? Gary

You can create a folder and then filter you email there, edit ->
message filters that should show up the filters. Check again to see
they have a lot of options.

Vikram:
Thank you for the suggestion; however, I have not had any good luck
creating folders for the various e-mailboxes that I have. Further,
those other e-mailboxes are not listed separately, nor are "inbox" or
"sent" or "draft" or "trash" folders created under each of the unlisted
e-mailboxes. If I were to activate all the e-mail addresses, it simply
goes to the universal folder called "on this computer" and that is not
acceptable.
Question: Does Ubuntu support other e-mail service clients? Perhaps
one like Thunderbird which is a WindowXP format?

I apologize for the fact that I can't help with evolution. And yes,
there are other mail clients like thunderbird [1] and claws-mail that
can very successfully work in Ubuntu. Just another suggestion: Gmail
actually offers to create pop accounts in the web based interface, so
you can access all your email from different accounts in one single
place. And as you might already know the label system in gmail is very
good.

Alright Sir, please don't find this offensive. The first link is on the
Ubuntu Community Documentation, so its not possible to have a Microsoft
advertisement there, plus it about Thunderbird not claws-mail. The
second link was changed just yesterday for some unknown reason. Here's

I am not offended at you at all, rather I was quite surprised at the
Ubuntu webpage for having an advertisement for Microsoft on it. The
popup box even had the word "advertisement" in the border in the upper,
left corner. That occurred when I clicked on the underlined word
"download" which when touched with the mouse arrow added the popup, but
not any action for completing a download. In the lower left corner is
the link to "itseverybodysbusiness.com". It most definitely has
"Microsoft" displayed across the top segment of the popup window.
The listed URL is the same address (1) that I presently have on my
other computer (loaded with ubuntu) except for the trailing "l" on the
extension of ".html" When I just tried that URL with one less "l", I
received error message 404 which says that I am looking for something
that is not there.
The Ubuntu link for Thunderbird was confusing. It lists for
"installation" two names that do not make any sense to me. These are:
Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 and newer; Dapper Drake 6.06, but those names mean
nothing to me. If you were me, then which one would you try, if any at all?
I reviewed "Gmail" and "qmail", but both those services seem to
require a new e-mail address for my correspondents to have to use. My
preference is not to go to an entirely new service which requires a
whole new set of e-mailboxes or a forwarding mode of operation.
Still ready for more trials. Gary

Alright so here's how to install thunderbird really quick:

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

and here for claws-mail

sudo apt-get install claws-mail

that should get everything setup for you.

I recommend using evolution as I said before, but after that Thunderbird
is very much liked by the Ubuntu community. Its reliable and fast so the
choice is yours. I usually tend to point users to links because then
they can self-discover and learn how to use wiki so they don't ever have
to ask questions again :)

Vikram:
I agree that one learns best when they do the work by stumbling yet
with guidance to find the correct direction. However and as I tried to
explain in prior e-mails to you, what pops up when I try to "download"
the claws file is that Microsoft advertisement. The URL shown here is
what I see and that does NOT contain any download information. Behind
each line of which there are four, is a .pdf file.
In the lower left corner is a "register" and "log in" for "World
Press", but I have not registered with that as I'm guessing it is not
affiliated with ubuntu. If I need to register first, then please tell
me and where that registration button is located. Gary

Alright so in the last email I gave you some commands, open up terminal
and type those in, it will ask you for a password just type in the
password you used to log-in to Ubuntu. You can install either of the
mail clients, and these commands will do everything for you :)

Thunderbird:

sudo apt-get install thunderbird

Claws-mail:

sudo apt-get install claws-mail

that should get everything setup for you

Vikram:
My laptop computer is turned on and the active URL is that UbuntuGeek
webpage. However, I am not familiar with what you mean by "open up
terminal". There are a listing of eight "categories" in the left
column; five listings under a title of "ads by Gooogle", but I see no
active topic called "terminal".
Perhaps that lack of my understanding of what a "terminal" means and
how to open one is a problem here. However, the time is almost 11PM and
I am headed to bed. Quite likely due to tomorrow's work schedule, I
will not be on the computer until Sunday. Hope that you have a great
weekend. Thanks again for the instructions and your patience. Gary

Alright my apologies, I should avoid being ambigious. Now here's what
you should do, I am giving you 2 options, both will get the work done:

1.

Your are on your desktop, minimize all windows -> Go to Applications
on the top left corner -> Then Accessories -> There you will see an
item called terminal -> Click on it to open it :) -> Now type in the
commands and follow the instructions in the last email. Also follow
[3]

2.

Your are on your desktop, minimize all windows -> Go to System on the
top left corner -> Then Administration -> Then Synaptic Package
Manager -> You should see something like this [1] -> Now in the search
bar type in thunderbird or claws-mail and then once you locate them in
the manager right click and select mark for installation. [2] And how
about this video [3]

Vikram:
Thanks for the instructions and I have followed them. I was able to
get Claws-mail installed on the laptop computer after finding
"terminal". The package is loaded and I was able to make the various
e-mailboxes that I need. However, I have been trying to send you this
e-mail via that computer, but the error message continues to display
"Recipient is not specified" even though I have two legitimate addresses
in the "to:" box. One is to you and the other is to one of my other
mailboxes so I can confirm that it was sent. Unfortunately, the message
does not go out. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again for all the
prior help. Gary

Alright, thanks for your patience. I haven't had a good experience
claws-mail. I would recommend Thunderbird for the separate email
boxes, I have tried this on thunderbird and thus you should give it a
try. While setting up a mailbox, don't use the global inbox settings
and you should be fine.

Vikram
