Did you make a back up file of previous Evolution?

If so then it might be called evolution-backup.tar.gz

I created such a file. I was having trouble with the sound output from the system, and decided to reload Ubuntu 9.10, and backed-up the email files to "evolution-backup.tar.gz (the default from Evolution.) I expected I'd be able to recover the backed-up preferences (three email addresses), contacts, and email. When I reloaded Ubuntu, and started Evolution, I chose to restore from backup. I picked the backup.tar.gz file (on an external drive), and Evolution told me it was not a recognized file. I manually reloaded the email settings, and tried to import the file, and got no better results. Evolution didn't recognize a backup file it created. I went into the backup file, and saw what appeared to be the appropriate files an folders.

Just put the tar.gz file in the root of your home directory. Then it works.

Rob: Thanks, Rob. I'm quite new to Ubuntu, and, although, familiar
with the term "root directory", I'm not sure how to put something into
the root. Do I just copy the file into the folder "home"?

Thanks. IJ

Yes, In home and on your name.

Sorry for the late answer.

Rob: Thanks for the suggestion, but, it didn't work. The file,
evolution-backup.tar.gz, is in my home folder, under my name (there's no
other user on this computer) but, working within Evolution, the program
won't recognize it.

In Evolution, from File, I choose 'import', and get the import
assistant. Choosing 'import a single file', I go to 'file system',
'ira' and then 'evolution-backup.tar.gz'. Choosing that file brings up
a screen that instructs me to choose the file I want to import and
select what type of file it is. The backup file is in a box next to
'filename' and the box below it has selections for file types. 'GZ' is
not a choice, and that appears to be why the 'File type' choices are
(what I used to call) greyed-out. None can be selected. When I double
click on the backup file name, it brings me back to the Home folder.

Going back and selecting 'Import data and settings from an older file'
brings up a message that Evolution can't find any importable settings.

I suspect I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out.

Thanks again for any help. I'm going to post on the Ubuntu forum.

Hmmm, I think you make a small mistake.

Close everything.

On top of your screen you see the botton Places. Click on it and go to personal folder. Right there should the tar.gz file be.

If not, copy it there.

Open your Evolution and choose from the menu....

The fifth option. It should be, Restore from back up file.

I use a Dutch version, so I am not sure what it´s called in English.

DO NOT USE the import option. That´s the wrong way.

Let me know.

Hi Rob: I think you've solved it. You're right. I wasn't picking the
correct file, but the one on my desktop. I'm about to forward my
existing mail so I won't lose it when I restore. I'll let you know how
it comes out.
