Cannot pick up e-mail.

Asked by Warren

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using ubuntu 9.04 on a partitioned disk with Vista. I loaded my e-mail information in Evolution. When I click Send/Receive I get the message “There are no messages in this folder” when messages are in my e-mail account. Also, I am not able to change my password even if I delete my login information and reenter it or click “Forget Password”. Which password should I use I have two, E-mail and network.
Thanks, Warren

Hi Tom, Woops - Your proposed answer is how to change the password in ubuntu, I want to change the e-mail password in evolution. Also you did not suggest anything to get evolution to pick up e-mail. I thank you for your help. Warren

The first part of your question relates to setting up Evolution and I suggest that you check that. To assist you I have included this HowTo: http://products.secureserver.net/email/email_evolution.htm

Particularly check that you have not ticked the box that says "Leave messages on server".

The second part of your question relating to your mail password, that is the password you have agreed to with your server, must be changed with your server as well as your modem/router.

If you meant the Evolution password, then proceed this way:

Go to System, Preferences, Encryption & Keyrings and in the "Password Keyring" tab, click on the entry (probably "login ...").
Click on "Change Unlock Password". Enter your current password. In the field for New Password, you can either enter a new password or leave it blank.

If you leave it blank, the system will ask "Store password unencrypted?", click on "Use unsafe storage". Now you will not be asked for a password when accessing Evolution.

I went over Evolution setup as yousuggested. I then called AT&T and was told they cannot help withEvolution. I then got help from them to set up Microsoft Outlook onan XP computer and it worked. Differences between what I was doingare:
Incoming server an “i” was addedto the POP3 incoming server and an “i” was added to the STMPserver also. In addition Outlook has a section in there setup calledServer Port Numbers.
The number for “Incoming Server(POP3): 995 and
    “Outgoing Sever (STMP): 465
I added the “i”s but have no placeto add the 995 and 465. Evolution is still not working.
Is POP and POP3 different?

As far as passwords when I go toSystem, Preferences, Encryption & Keyrings I get a choice of twotabs Encryption or PGP Passphrases. I still cannot change thepassword.

Thank, Warren

Evolution is not very intuitive to this, but simply add the port number to the POP3/IMAP/SMTP server address.

So for example:
Your SMTP server is "imail.example.com" and the port is 465

    imail.example.com:465

POP and POP3 are different, but for your issues I would not concern yourself with it. POP is very old and not supported by very many providers, just think POP3 whenever someone mentions POP.

As for the passwords in Encryption and keyrings you need to create a keyring first. See this how to:

http://www.gnupg.org/faq.html

Good luck.

Adding the numbers and the “i”s didnot help. Without them when I click Send/Receive I getthe message "Waiting" then it changes to "Complete" and the message barturns orange. The problem is that I also get the message "There are nomessages in the folder."
Thanks, Warren

Can you provide the details of the mail server you are trying to connect to?

My problems are solved!!!!! Please close case.

WHAT I DID:

In Account editor: RECEIVING EMAIL I added an :i: in front of the server
name example

“ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net” I did not use the number and in SECURITY
select SSL encryption and if you do not check Remember Password it will
ask for it and it can be changed.

In SENDING EMAIL add the “i”in front of server name, check the box for
Server requires authentication and in Security select SSL encryption.

In both RECEIVING and SENDING the username is the name in the email
address before the @ sign. Hope this helps and if you want me to clarify
what I did let me know.

Warren
