How does Evolution work?

Asked by Barbara Maver

I would like to be able to receive email from three accounts to Evolution. Can I do this? When asked for my email address I gave one but I have two others. I thought the idea of evolution was that I could get all my mail in the one place. One of my accounts has a very little place left in the mail box and I would like to store more messages. Also I may not have set it up properly as there was an error in fetching mail according to a little message that popped up.

I followed the set up instructions and gave Pop 3 and SMPT for server information. Is this enough?

I wonder if there is a way to add the other addresses once I know the thing is working.

You can add all three of your accounts. Try the following:

1) Open Evolution
2) Goto Edit->Preferences
3) Hit the "Add" Button on the Right
4) That will start the account wizard. Use that to put the information for the next account you want to add.
5) Repeat 1-4 for each account you need to add.

A pop3 and smtp server should be enough to get your mail. If your email provider provides information about the server, you might want to make sure that you have all the settings correct since very minor differences can cause you to not be able to connect.

To view the setting of an existing email account:

1) Open evolution
2) Go to Edit->Preferences
3) Select the mail account you want to edit.
4) Click "edit"

This answer has helped me to add in another account. Thank you!

I am still not able to use the thing though because I get error messages
all the time. I started trying two years ago and gave up but I'd really
like to get it going.

I just feel so stupid with it. Can you tell me what I should be putting
into the boxes. "receiving email" and "sending email"?

I would really appreciate this information as I haven't a clue.

The information that goes into the "sending email" and "receiving email"
section will depend on what email provider you are using. If you tell
me the various email provides are you are using I may be able to help
you find this information. I am NOT asking for your personal username
or password. Rather, I need to know if you are using something like
Yahoo or Gmail or something else.

Thank you. I have got it worked out now . I am just having trouble with
the passwords. I have managed to send myself an email from evolution to
riseup but am having trouble receiving it. Is the password something you
choose from the dropdown list or some other word? I've tried choosing the
word login which is what I put in the box for authentication but really
have I made up a password and forgotten it maybe? How would I change it to
one I know?

The password is probably the same password that you would use to log
into their web interface if they have one. Also, if you don't know what
to put into the Authentication Type drop down, you can always hit the
"Check for Supported Types" button.

Hi
I am totally at a loss about the passwords. I have no clue what they are.
Why make up a system that requires passwords and not give you them? I
could sit there all night stabbing away. I can send the mail OK but I can
also send it via webmail. I'd like to be able to receive it.
Any ideas?
