Can't get or send e-mail using Evolution

Asked by Bryant Pratt

Binary package hint: evolution

I cannot receive or send e-mails using Evolution 2.22.3.1. When I hit the Send/Receive button, I get the following error:
"Error while performing operation. MAIL FROM command failed: Must issue a STARTTLS command first"

The send meter shows a full bar and the status shows "Complete," but nothing is sent.

I am trying to receive from "POP3.live.com" and trying to send to "SMTP.live.com" In the
Evolution Account Editor there is no Server Type "POP3," only "POP."

I am running the Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release: 8.04 OS on a Dell Mini 9 notebook PC.

I have no trouble sending and receiving mail for this account or any other account in Outlet Express on my desktop PC running Windows XP.

that's an user configuration question and not a bug

Use Thunderbird instead of Evolution. Evolution makes only problems - this launchpad is full of questions regarding evolution.

You can find Thunderbird in the Synaptic Package Manager or you can visit the site http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/.

Hope it helps.

Check your configuration details:

 POP server: pop3.live.com
 POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example <email address hidden>
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
 SMTP server: smtp.live.com
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
 TLS/SSL required? Yes.

Also check which port number your server uses (probably 995) and append that to the address (pop3.live.com:995 and smtp.live.com:25)

Peter,

Thank you for your help with my problems trying to use Evolution. After
trying the suggestions from others on the forum (none of which worked), I
took your advice and installed Mozilla Thunderbird. It works very well and
is now the e-mail client on my new Dell Mini 9 PC.
