how to change email notifications/alerts.

Asked by seedainvisible737

how do i change my email notifications from just a beep to something more like a default tone? i know that sounds like windows. trust me i am far from windows. I just want more control over the default tones in the email alerts. eventually, i will create my own as either a wave or mp3 or some other format, as long as i know Evolution can handle it.

thanks,
L.C.

P.S. hopefully it is something that i am over looking.

In Evolution go to Menu->Edit->Preferences.
On the "Preferences" window select "Mail Preferences" in the leftmost column and in the General tab select the option "Play sound file when new mail arrives".
Specify where Evolution will find this sound file in the entry after the option.
I actually don't know what file formats Evolution will accept, but I would be surprised if it doesn't accept ogg.

Evolution uses the Gnome sound daemon (esd).
You have to make sure that this is enabled in Menu->System->Preferences->Sound in the Sounds tab (Enable software sound mixing (ESD)).
I guess the type of playable sound files will depend on codec installed.
You can check them with esdplay (note that this is not normally installed, if you want you can download it throught the esound-clients package).

Having just upgraded to Hardy I have lost my evolution notification sound settings. In Menu->Edit->Preferences->General there is now no Notification option.

I have also tried looking for the Notification Plugin in Edit->Plugins and it doesn't exist.
