How do you install Java on i386 computer

What the extension is? is it .deb or .bin? or else

if .deb, just double click it to install

Install the package :
ubuntu-restricted-extras

Oh, i tend to just use Synaptic Package Manager to handle allll of that sort of thing for me. Try it by going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic is near the end

it's got a great couple of search tools for looking up java packages and stuff

It's deb, and when I double click it, an installation attempt is made but
the package installer responds with: Error: Dependency is not
Satisfiable: Sun-java5-jre. It also points out that you must accept the
EULA to get the package installed.

Try looking in Synaptic for a better version of Java in there. Synaptic sorts out the dependencies and all of that. I've always had trouble with debs but Synaptic is easy.

it mean you must have Sun-java5-jre installed before install sun-java5-jdk 1.4.0-06-1_i386 deb
But, like Tom said, search them with synaptic it's easy

Open synaptic, click search button, make sure the search option is to search in file name and description, search word sun java

Wow, sorry about that. Synaptic is usually the best place to look. I opened up all the repositories that are normally available and i couldn't find the particular java package you're looking for but there was tons of stuff to do with java generally. I spent ages scrolling through the list but it seems i don't have any installed! Which is weird because looking in firefox

I can see both the relevant boxes ticked! So i went back to Synaptic and sorted by installed packages (clicked on the "S" in the grey headings line) and found these packages

adblock plus
dbus
gdb
libdbus 1-3
libgtk

I only recognised "AdBlock Plus" which has speeded up my internet access and download times hugely. Some of the other ones look quite important too so i hope you have these. I don't think i have any of the programming ones in this install because i've had to keep it as light as i can.

All what you need is into multiverse repository...

How to install Java ( this is for sun-java6 the same you can do with sun-java5 )

To install sun-java6

Please first enable the multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

and then select this as your default java jre with

sudo update-java-alternatives

does anyone know where i can download a java installer in deb format? my computer isn't connected to the internet.

The program will not install, apparently because the Gateway Celeron I have won't support it. Or the software company is not supporting Gateway. Thanks for the help.
